In 2012 I worked on a couple videos (here and here) created entirely within the Worlds.com VR engine.

Worlds.com, the precursor to Second Life, launched around 1995 and hosted, well, worlds created for popular artists like Britney Spears, Aerosmith and David Bowie.

WorldsPlayer is an interactive tool for exploring Worlds.com's 3D multi-user Web-of-Worlds. When you enter one of our 3D worlds, you assume a persona by "wearing" an avatar (3D visual image representing you). Choose from over 100 different humans, animals, characters and strange creatures! You can then walk around the worlds, explore the different worlds, see, chat, and interact with people, send email, animate yourself - all in 3D!

As an early proponent of the internet, Bowie went as far as having his own ISP: BowieNet. It's no surprise then that he embraced the early VR platform to connect with fans. It must have been quite a thing visiting Worlds.com with Win98 PCs.

The above gifs must be from 1997/98 around the time of the Earthling album. I saved them in 2012 from BowieWorld then converted into PNGs from their original format (I don't recall what format that was, it's been a few years) and reanimated each as gifs to share now in tribute to a true visionary.
