{{SO! A fairly short time before i started writing this, sheriff-caitlyn made a thing examining her champion’s entry into the League. Unfortunately, Jinx doesn’t have that, but that does not mean that i was without inspiration for my dear ball of insanity. Hold onto your butts, ladies and gentlemen, i’m going to be breaking down everything from lines in the game to skills that she has to her video! All that below the cut!}}
So! First off! Her basic lore!
Jinx lives to wreak havoc without a thought for the consequences, leaving a trail of mayhem and panic in her wake. A manic and impulsive criminal, she despises nothing more than boredom, and gleefully brings her own volatile brand of pandemonium to the one place she finds dullest: Piltover. With an arsenal of deadly toys, she unleashes the brightest explosions and loudest blasts - all the better to shock and surprise the hapless authorities. Always just out of the law's reach, Jinx's favorite game is to toy with Piltover's finest - especially Vi.
Is it just me, or does that look like a 2D picture that a frustrated Caitlyn would paint? i’m not defending her, since she’s definitely one of the villains of the League, but they’re generally not described like this right off the bat, and they usually have similar body counts with added motives to the mix. It seemed weird to me that she would start off like this. Besides that, there are a lot of questions this brings up.
Why Piltover? What about Ionia? They seem all tradition and peace. How does that not fit her definition of boredom? What about the tiny little hamlet of Bandle? That might not last long, but why didn’t she start there and move on once it was burned to the ground? Surely Demacia should be more dull, right? A city based entirely off rules that refuses to move forward? More like Snoreacia, amirite? No? Moving on. my point here is that there is a smorgasbord of places FAR more boring than Piltover by the standards of an anarchist. So why pick the place that actually seems to be in the most interesting flux?
Speaking of Piltover’s current state, how is she able to keep away from all of the Piltover PD? More on that question later, but just be thinking on why she’s able to outmaneuver even Vi on enough of a regular basis that she’s infamous for it?
Piltover had long been known as the City of Progress, a place where peace and order reigned. That serenity was challenged when a new kind of criminal arrived, the likes of whom had never been seen. This mysterious outlaw unleashed a series of warped and destructive capers that endangered the entire city, and left its people reeling from the worst crime spree in Piltover's history.
That first sentence. That first sentence sets up how long Vi’s entrance has been. Maybe not exactly, but it’s been a WHILE since crime has been a real problem. It’s pretty believable that it’s been at least a year, and that the whole of the police force is straightened up to be a well oiled machine. Then, they encountered a new kind of criminal. Not someone that was a robber, or a gangster, or someone that was in it for a reason they could figure out, but someone that seemed to be blowing places up at random. It was a mystery who it could be or what they wanted! And it wasn’t just bad, it was the WORST in history! Allow me to show you a thing from elsewhere.
One of the reasons Piltover is known as the City of Progress is because it has an extraordinarily low crime rate. This hasn't always been the case; brigands and thieves of all sorts used to find the city-state an ideal mark for plunder, primarily due to the valuable resources it imports to fuel its techmaturgical research. Some even theorize that it would have fallen long ago to the chaos of organized crime if not for Caitlyn, the Sheriff of Piltover.
That’s from Caitlyn’s lore. Piltover used to be a cesspool of organized crime, and yet this was the worst crime spree that the city had ever known. And that was before she was even KNOWN! How in the ever loving hell is she keeping away from the cops!? What is this little waif’s secret!? We’ll get into that a bit later still. but this won’t be the last time we encounter this question before we do.
As the string of crimes without rhyme or reason hit the city, sightings of the lawbreaker emerged. Though the young woman's origins were a mystery, some saw traces of Piltover hextech in her firearms, while others described the street fashions of Zaun in her dress. Because her arrival always brought trouble with it, those who crossed her path soon gave her a name: Jinx.
She’s already become the worst criminal in Piltover history, and sightings are just now emerging, and they’re spotty. These seem to be the shell shocked survivors of terrorist attacks that leave no one alive. When i first started playing her, i wanted to play a Jinx that had no body count, since it never says she killed anyone, but the more i examined the lore, the more it seemed to point to her being strangely efficient at the beginning. She seems very thorough at the start for someone that’s as crazy as the Jinx we know and play. And she gets less and less so as the time goes on. Almost as though she’s slowly losing her mind even worse than she was at the start. Maybe that’s how she got away all the time? She just killed everyone that came near? But then she would have had to kill Vi and Cait, and we know she didn’t do that. And what about the other defenders of Piltover? No, she had to be escaping. shelve the question again.
Ah, and now we get a proper description. Finally. Nobody knows where she’s from, but her weapons seem to be Piltover made, or at least Piltover inspired. And her clothes are Zaunite in nature. So we’re pretty sure she’s from one of those two places. Right? And then her naming. Pretty standard, though it seems odd that an anarchist like herself would just accept the name she’s given so readily as to paint it on everything. Weird.
As Jinx's rampage escalated, Caitlyn - the sheriff of Piltover - responded by declaring a state of emergency and organizing a city-wide manhunt. In typical Jinx fashion, the criminal marked the Piltover treasury, the city's most secure building, with a direct challenge to its most abrasive officer. With a caricature of Vi's face splashed across the treasury's facade, and a scribbled time and date of her supposed raid, Jinx was openly daring the enforcer to stop her from robbing it.
Alright, Cait, something’s off. Why did you wait so long to declare an emergency state? No doubt quite a few people have died to this terrorist. No matter, though, i’m not really here to judge Cait, i’m examining Jinx.
Now, something that’s interesting here. There’s a bit of contradictory information right up there. Did you spot it? “In typical Jinx fashion, the criminal marked the Piltover treasury”. That means she has an MO, and she has been planning these things out in advance. Now think back to earlier, where it said something else, “string of crimes without rhyme or reason hit the city”. Not sure about you, but i think she has quite a bit of rhyme, and that implies a little bit of reason. She’s got about as much of a plan as the Joker. Despite his saying “Do I look like a guy with a plan to you?”, he has everything mapped out up to and beyond the point where he blows up the cellphone bomb in the guy’s chest.
What’s more, she challenges a specific person. One of the two biggest names in Law Enforcement around those parts. And possibly the most likely to kill her of the two. Besides that, it’s the one that’s almost as big on “stickin it to the man” as she is, if less destructively. As a chaotic anarchist, it would seem she would have more fun poking fun at the serious character, right? It goes back to the same question of “why Piltover?” Why Vi? Is Vi, perhaps the one she’s there for? Is it supposed to be a “I’m better than you” statement?
Determined to put the troublemaker behind bars, Vi watched and waited outside the treasury until Jinx's time had finally come. True to her scrawled promise, the smiling menace showed her face. Knowing this was her chance to capture the outlaw, Vi gave chase into the building's interior. She smashed through wall after wall to chase down Jinx, who giggled as she lit up the evacuated treasury with fiery explosions. Vi finally cornered the criminal inside the vault, but Jinx wasn't done just yet. With a maniacal laugh, she fired a barrage of rockets, bringing the entire building down upon them both.
OOOOOOOKAY! This is where i got suspicious that Jinx wasn’t a normal human at my first reading of her lore, and it’s the first real hint that Jinx doesn’t want Vi dead. But i’ll get to that in a second. First, lets examine a little something. Vi is short cutting her way through walls, while Jinx... seems more focused on blowing up other things? Jinx is easily outrunning the notoriously hard to escape champion, and this would be, as anyone that’s played Jinx before would know, an easy kill on Jinx’s part. Right? If you can keep the distance, a rocket launcher is going to kill off someone that’s just punching things, right? Of course. So why didn’t she? Was Jinx just not able to get a good shot off on Vi while the Enforcer jumped through walls? Possibly, but then why was she able to bring down the building so easily at the end? It’s quite possible that she was setting up to humiliate the Enforcer instead of kill. And on a side note, how in the HELL did she survive that!?
That’s the big thing. How is she still alive after that? What in the actual hell!? It says they both got buried under the rubble, so how did she survive, and furthermore-
When Vi finally crawled out of the ruins, the battered enforcer found no trace of Jinx. Adding insult to injury, not a single ounce of gold had been taken from the ruined vault. Instead, the criminal left a parting message to her favorite officer of the law - a challenge only now visible through the gaping opening in Piltover's skyline. The lights of the city spelled out a simple taunt: you'll never catch me. As Vi read the message, she heard the distant laughter of her new nemesis, and the city plunged into utter darkness for the very first time.
-how did she wake up first!? Vi’s got armor, Jinx has a bikini and hotpants. What the actual fuck?! There’s very little excuse for her surviving that, much less waking up and getting out first. Besides Vi’s armor protecting her, Vi has her blast shield, and her gloves are modified mining equipment which, as we know, can smash these walls fairly effortlessly. And yet Jinx was able to get out of the rubble fast enough and easy enough that Vi is left crawling through the debris while Jinx is running off laughing. Not to mention she’s had time to blow a message in the remainder of the wall, assuming she wasn’t accurate enough to do that while running from Vi.
Speaking of that, Fishbones is apparently accurate enough to write out a fairly long message, when written in explosion holes. If you’ve never tried writing by shoving a pen cap through paper, it’d be about that difficult to write that legibly. Try it now. i’ll wait.
And here’s another thing. Jinx was probably waiting with a Super Mega Death Rocket aimed at the power station while watching for Vi to wake up. That’s more planning. All for Vi’s sake. And it means she could have easily filled the room with explosives, taking out one of the biggest obstacles for her fun. Isn’t that odd. An anarchist not taking out something keeping their “freedom” in check? Almost like she has a reason to keep Vi alive. Weird.
