The actual unit takes the form of a cross-cut carpet shell clam, complete with siphons and foot. It can contain a city inside it, as well as countless doors that those who control Elmo can use to go to any location in the world. Within this city, the VDC takes on a humanoid interface form that is spread through multiple interfaces, which have been noted to bear startling resemblance to the Sawada twins (despite being female by choice) due to being constructed out of Ietsuna's DNA map. The humanoid interface, named Elmo, serves as Rain Guardian, though it must be noted that the Essential Last Mannered Orchestration (ELMO) refers to the entirety of the AI and its accompanying humanoid interfaces.
The required input of 5,000,000 Fiamma Volts for the Vongola dei Cieli to start functioning, on top of additional energy costs, makes it cost-prohibitive to activate, until Ietsuna anchored the main body in the active volcano Mt Etna in Sicily, allowing Elmo to function off geothermal energy with only minimal Night Flame input from Ietsuna – and thus triggering its transformation into the Vongola di Notte. Its high artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and computing capacity required in order to maintain the internal environment also means that, compared to the standard Box Weapon size of 343 cm3, Elmo's Box form is 1000cm3 in volume.
(The 7×7×7 dimensions of normal Box Weapons are my hypothesis after looking at a ruler. The 10×10×10 expansion is also my hypothesis for Elmo only).
Using a variety of Flames to bend space, it can vary its internal size to contain a maximum of 411,376 km3 internally while maintaining an external volume of 1000 cm3 (l. 10 cm×w. 10 cm×h. 10 cm). Having said that, its external size can also be matched to its maximum internal size; hence, the Vongola dei Cieli can be both the largest and smallest Box Weapon created. Several gates within can also be constructed to contain portals leading to other locations worldwide, creating a network of bases that span the globe without technically being in the same physical location. Thus, the name of 'Box Weapon' may be debatable if not for its size-changing characteristic allowing it to serve as a pocket dimension. The logistical capabilities and force projection that it confers has named it 'the strongest Box Weapon' and 'the world-ending weapon'.
Due to the unique structure of the Vongola dei Cieli, it requires all seven Flames of the Sky to function effectively. This is achieved by Ietsuna, who kidnapped members of the Millefiore Famiglia using Murrina to trap them within the Millefiori. Using all the Flames of its prisoners, it can thus use all the capabilities of the Flames of the Sky to defend and possibly counter-attack, although it must be said that the Vongola dei Cieli has lower direct offensive capabilities than Irie Shouichi's Melone Base under the Fossa Calypso system. Using the Dying Will Flames, Elmo can manufacture Box Weapons and replicate individual lesser clam-units of itself. These units, including its administrator Unit #000000 and itself as Unit #FFFFFF, are numbered according to the RGB hex triplet code and share the identical DNA map of Sawada Ietsuna − making them essentially clones of the twins. Collectively, these individuals clam-units are referred to as the Rete Vongole. These clones form a hive mind via their bio-electricity and the fact that they are all interfaces of the Vongola dei Cieli's system. With the network, the clones can communicate in a quasi-telepathic manner, experience and share the same memories of all the other clones. This shared collective memory, as well having the same powers, allows them to boost their abilities and have their faculties used more efficiently. The clones serve as maintainers and do the grunt work needed within the base, overseen by ELMO.
The VDC can also observe everything within itself, maintaining a constant internal environment as needed. This skill applies only within the boundaries of its shell.
Verdaille: Enhanced protection using Lightning Flames
Brunaille: self-repair function using Sun flames.
Grisaille: Elmo sucks all stray Flames within its internal environment into itself. This creates a Doppler shift by which everything in its internal environment appears grey. Despite its name, this skill uses Rain flames.
Sacré Bleu: (Fr: Sacred blue) limited case of Grisaille. Target-specific.
Gouache: employing a mechanism not unlike the superior mirage Fata Morgana, Elmo can warp its appearance to appear invisible to all observations except physical touch.
Due to the input of the Flame of Night, Elmo is capable of spatial point-to-point connection. As long as coordinates (x, y, z) exist with respect to the Earth's core, Elmo can connect via gate to that point, be it within solid rock, in the stratosphere, or in the middle of the sea. A maximum of 10 projectiles can be fired at any time.
Elmo's on-board mainframe also allowed Ietsuna's perfection of the Typhon 4-dimensional targeting system, which allows him to set a t-coordinate to aim and shoot projectiles through space-time. The high cost of shooting through time, however, means that only one projectile – of variable size – can be deployed within 24 hours.
The unstable nature of the Night Flame also allows for modification from projectile use to cutting use through Castor and Pollux. Using the Night Flame to create portals, and then collapsing them immediately detaches 2 points in space, creating an atomically precise 'cut' using dimensional shift.
• Helene: a single-use shot of Flame which can be deployed in (x, y, z) coordinate fashion from anywhere in the world. Under certain conditions and given plenty of energy, it can theoretically be extended to (x, y, z, t) and sent on either end of the arrow of time, as Elmo demonstrated, rendering it an absolutely accurate weapon. This weapon can also be used to deliver airstrikes by displacing volleys of the Vongola dei Cieli to a chosen location, as shown when Ama deployed the Leonids airstrike
• Castor and Pollux: a dual-shot of Night Flame which creates unstable portals which collapse almost immediately, and anything passing between takes destructive priority. An atomically precise cut may be achieved using the near-simultaneous collapse of the portals.
• Rete Vongole is Elmo's all-purpose server network. Using Ietsuna's DNA map as a base, several identical clones are created and propagate using Cloud Flames. These clones form a hive mind via their bio-electricity and the fact that they are all biological interfaces of the Vongola di Cieli AI. The clones serve as maintainers and do the grunt work needed within the base, overseen by the Essential Last Mannered Orchestration, the network administrator of the Vongole di Notte.
The most terrifying power, however, is the 3D printing capabilities of the VDC, which can print and assemble Box Weapons like a 3D printer on command. This confers an adaptive advantage by which the VDC can immediately combat any opponent it faces.
The Boundaries of Absolute Possibilities
Following the conception of the Box Weapon, it was soon realised that the execution of the VDC was too large for conventional computing. It was necesssary to limit the degrees of freedom produced. Thus, in order to provide those absolute boundaries and coordinate the activities of the Vongola dei Cieli, two AI systems were created and personified in Units #000000 and #FFFFFF.
• #000000 is referred to as ELMO, the Essential Line Mannered Orchestration. She is the main administrator of the Rete Vongole and daily operations aboard the Vongola dei Cieli. She is the one in control of their mental unit.
• #FFFFFF is referred to as HELENE, the Hardware Emulation Lacuna Ecletic Nimbus Eexcution. She is frequently present as the body of the Vongola dei Cieli, hence she is not present much or capable of direct intervention. She is also the main server of the Rete Vongole's quantum comm systems.
Fossa Calypso – La Regina del Mare Mediterraneo
• This weapon is possibly based on Charybdis in Greek mythology.
• The base animal for Elmo is the Venerupis decussata, or cross-cut carpet shell, known as Vongola verace in Italian.
• Elmo's name comes from St Elmo, from which St Elmo's fire is derived. In ancient Greece, the appearance of a single one was called helene (Greek: ἑλένη), meaning torch, and two were called Castor and Pollux.
○ Murrina (common pluralization murrine) is an Italian term for coloured patterns or images made in a glass cane that are revealed when cut in cross-sections.
○ Millefiori is a glass-work technique which produces distinctive decorative patterns on glassware. The term millefiori is a combination of the Italian words "mille" (thousand) and "fiori" (flowers).
○ A Verdaille is a painting executed entirely or primarily in shades of green. Such a painting is described as having been painted "en verdaille"
○ A Brunaille is a painting executed entirely or primarily in shades of brown. Such a painting is described as having been painted "en brunaille"
○ Grisaille (/ɡrɨˈzaɪ/ or /ɡrɨˈzeɪl/; French: gris [ɡʁizaj] 'grey') is a term for painting executed entirely in monochrome or near-monochrome, usually in shades of grey.
○ Gouache refers to opaque gum arabic used in painting.
• Fossa Calypso is the Italian name of the Calypso Deep, the deepest point of the Ionian Sea, and named after the Greek nymph-goddess in the Odyssey.
• Mount Etna (Italian: Etna, Sicilian: Mungibeddu or a Muntagna, Latin: Aetna) is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, Italy. In Greek Mythology, the deadly monster Typhon was trapped under this mountain by Zeus, the god of the sky and thunder and king of gods, and the forges of Hephaestus were said to also be located underneath it. This is the origin of Elmo's offensive mode and its TYPHON operating system.
• ELMO:
○ Essential refers to Elmo's status as the essential component to run the Vongole network.
○ A line is defined by any two points, being one-dimensional and with zero-width, referring to Elmo's ability of spatial-temporal point-to-point connection.
○ Mannered comes from mannerism, which. The word mannerism derives from the Italian maniera, meaning "style" or "manner". Like the English word "style", maniera can either indicate a specific type of style (a beautiful style, an abrasive style) or indicate an absolute that needs no qualification (someone "has style"). It refers to an expression in art.
○ Orchestration is a computing term: it describes the automated arrangement, coordination, and management of complex computer systems, middleware, and services. It is often discussed as having an inherent intelligence or even implicitly autonomic control, but those are largely aspirations or analogies rather than technical descriptions. In reality, orchestration is largely the effect of automation or systems deploying elements of control theory.
• HELENE:
○ Hardware in refers to computer hardware, the collection of physical elements that constitutes a computer system. such as the monitor, mouse, keyboard, computer data storage, hard disk drive (HDD), graphic cards, sound cards, memory, motherboard, and so on, all of which are physical objects that are tangible.
○ Emulation: In computing, an emulator is hardware or software that enables one computer system (called the host) to behave like another computer system (called the guest). An emulator typically enables the host system to run software or use peripheral devices designed for the guest system.
○ Lacuna: a blank space, a gap.
○ Ecletic: deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources.
○ Nimbus: a luminous cloud or a halo surrounding a supernatural being or a saint.
○ Eexcution: Execution in computer and software engineering is the process by which a computer or a virtual machine performs the instructions of a computer program. The instructions in the program trigger sequences of simple actions on the executing machine.
