Anime Awakenings Round 2 Side B Poll 4
Who is the most iconic LGBT+ awakening?
James (Pokémon)
Patamon (Digimon)
Propaganda:
James -
"There were times when James would cross dress and look like a woman and every time it happened, I would go "dang I wish I could do that and actually pass for the other gender" (but less eloquently because I was. a child) and!! I really liked his voice and wished I could have it!! So later on (after years of watching the pokemon anime and eventually figuring out I was nonbinary (because at first I was thinking that I just wanted to look a little more masculine)) I realized that James is one of the big reasons I figured out I was nonbinary! He gives me SO much gender envy and all he has to do is EXIST. (/positive /affectionate)"
Patamon -
"This is going to sound entirely deranged, but in the original series' dub, as a child I thought Patamon was a girl, because he was voiced by a woman. However, he later evolves into Angemon, who is a very clearly masculinely-designed humanoid man. I was under the (errant) belief that Patamon was a girl who could become a boy. It may not be the most clear instance of queer discovery, but I was about five and it was the first time in my life I had conceptualized the idea of gender not being a hard-set thing that could never change (even if I was ultimately incorrect about the context), and I think it paved the way for a lot more complicated thoughts about gender as I got older, but I have to remind myself once in a while that me being queer now is mostly thanks to a fat dubiously-genderqueer flying guinea pig."
