A fairly nice night of drinking and relaxing around a bonfire with friends had taken a bad turn when Carol ran her mouth one too many times, sparking a fight between herself and Tommy. Not wanting to air their business, she dragged her boyfriend away from the group and a fair distance into the woods. The light of the bonfire was still visible from here but hopefully their voices weren’t loud enough to carry back as they bickered.
Finally fed up with her, Tommy turned to walk back to their friends simply flipping Carol off as she shouted, “Fuck you, Tommy!” after him. Too upset to go back yet, the girl paced anxiously and played with the zipper of her puffy jacket. She was still ignorant of her surroundings, too wrapped up in her own thoughts to notice anything, or anyone, usual. That is until she took a step and heard a disproportionately loud noise in the underbrush behind her.
Whirling around to look for the source of the noise, Carol called out nervously, “Is someone there...? Hello?” Her hand slipped into her pocket to grip her keys tightly.
