what if keith comes back bc the team realizes kuron is a clone and he either willingly steps down or can’t pilot black for some reason so they’re short a leader again and short a team member and everyone’s like ‘keith why don’t u be bp again’ but he can’t and then he tells lance “how about u give it a try” and lance is uncertain bc wth? him? but allura backs keith up bc once upon a time lance believed in her ability to pilot blue when she herself didn’t and once upon a time lance believed in keith’s ability to be a leader when he himself didn’t and now it’s their turn to help lance realize he’s got what it takes to be a leader and the team speaks up and hunk and kuron and pidge and coran all encourage him and he climbs into black and

back then he’d wanted to be bp to prove he could, bc he didn’t feel he had anything special of his own to contribute to the team, bc he just felt like a seventh wheel and he had so much to prove but now

now he climbs in and he’s encouraged his teammates and soothed their insecurities when no one else could, he’s unlocked a new form in his bayard, he’s given valuable input when they’re in a pinch and there’d been no one else to do it and he’s given them drive

this time when he puts his hands on the controls and thinks “please”, it’s not bc he thinks he needs to prove himself to his friends it’s bc he wants so badly to be able to protect his team his friends his family so he puts his hands on the controls and he holds his breath and thinks “please” and barely dares to hope

and a lion’s roar echoes in his head and black rears up in her hangar bc she’s found another leader, one born from adversity and filled with hope, a different kind of leader from the two she’s had previously this past year but no less worthy for it and so she rears and

Ok but like. Lance was insecure abt his place on the team. That would've been a perfect opportunity to give him the leader role?? The most important role???? Instead, they just used his insecurities as a way to solidify Keith's role which was. :/
