🌹- (Hellboy) - I am not allowed alcohol. It doesn’t matter how frequently I tell Hellboy, Abe and Liz that I am of age and I can legally drink, I don’t get alcohol. The closest I can get to a proper drink is a can of cider. (Admittedly this is so I don’t accidentally ‘whump’ out whilst drunk).

🌹- (Hellboy) - Abe and I (when not going into field) tend to make up the ‘nerd’ team. Good book knowledge, good memory for mythology, just got the problem of sometimes wandering off after a thought trail.

🌹- (SW:CW) - sometimes Cad and I forget that I am 24/7 a small and squishy human youngling. usually this ends up with a fiery explosion and me spending a few days in a med bay.

Gone Swimming

a BPRD Buddies self-insert drabble - 711 words

in which practise is practise, and a swimming lesson goes as well as expected

Inhale. Steam, salt, warm air, still air.

Exhale. Lukewarm water, echoes, silence, company.

I stood at the shallow end of the pool, clear water reaching ripples of green and blue under old lamps high overhead. Everything beyond my waist was submerged in the odd numbness of water.

Vaguely I heard the beeping of my heart monitor. Slow, nice and slow. Not the harried screech of a shock or panic attack. I turned the wristband over, the plastic rubbing weirdly against my skin. It’d been months since I’d made the choice to put it on and it still sometimes chafed.

“Check earpiece”, Abe said into my head and I winced.

“Too loud”, I replied, glaring back over my shoulder at the table of screens that had been dragged into the hall. Abe acknowledged with a nod, fiddled with a radio dial, then spoke into a microphone.

“Check earpiece.” It still crackled like all hell, but it was tolerable. Besides, there was little more one could hope for with a frequently used and (mostly) water-proof piece of old tech. I gave him a thumbs-up.

“Okay then”, he mumbled, attention focused on one, maybe two of the screens set up. Another BPRD attendee was tapping rapidly away at a keyboard next to Abe. I wasn’t entirely sure how or why they needed more than one screen, but I don’t think any of us were going to argue with the science research division.

“Well, I dare say we’re ready for another round”, Abe called over to me. “Whenever you’re ready.”

I dived in. Slipping under the water’s surface, cold sensation washing over my face and my body becoming weightless. The pool floor skidded along underneath me, beginning to slope away as I swam further and deeper. Stroke, kick, stroke, kick.

It was quiet. Peaceful. Just the faintest dulled beeping kept my mind in the present. I found my mind wishing to stay here in the calm and silent, free of weight and necessity. Necessity arose however, as my lungs began to gently burn and I rose back to the surface. Hauling in a breath, I went back down. I wasn’t doing any more long underwater sections, breathing between each stroke now as I went through each length of the pool. Faintly I could register the monitor’s beeping begin to increase in rate, in pace. More importantly, I could feel my skin starting to crawl. The more that rate increased, the more I could see flecks of black forming on my hands, peeling away into the water. That just sent bursts of panic into my system, upping the rate.

Breath, I told myself. Swim, breath. Focus on the strokes. Keep your heart-rate steady.

Stroke, kick, breath. Stroke, kick, breath. More flecks, more beeping, even more flecks.

“You’re doing really well”, Abe spoke through the earpiece, breaking the anxious thoughts away. “Your heart-rate is stabilising, you can keep up with this.” Smoke curling in the water like-

Enough.

The shriek of my monitor filled the water as hands were swarmed with the black smoke, blossoming in size to huge paws. I felt the goggles on my face snap, the rubber headband falling apart from my head. Teeth were too large, even as my head pushed outward. My legs were different too, the knee wrong, the ankle wrong.

My feet, all four of them, hit the swimming pool floor. I was still a quarter of the way from the end of the pool. Thoughts buzzed, roared, snapped, urged to run, to fight, until I shook my head and focused on the new body in the water.

“It’s okay”, Abe was saying, a hand reached toward me. “Come on over.”

The grimm wolf shook its head (I shook my head) and began to slosh through the water. There wasn’t enough depth to swim, so I just had to wade. Pressing my bone skull face into Abe’s open hand, I let out the tired rumble that had built up in my chest.

“We’ll get there”, Abe said, reassuring and gentle. “It’s a matter of practise.”

Another tired rumble, only this one had a snap to the tone.

“…A lot of practise then.”

Huffing out breath, I nuzzled up further to Abe, to which he continued to stroke the grimm wolf skull.
