Whats is the Use of elastics?
Elastics are used to apply additional pressure needed to correctly move your misaligned teeth. They typically stretch over tiny loops on the top and bottom brackets specially placed to anchor the rubber bands. In this article, I want to explain about the use of elastics in orthodontics and tell you why you may or may not need them. So, what are elastics? Where to put the It?

It’s been 4 days since I’ve gotten the elastics. The first and second day was really uncomfortable since there was so much tension. It felt like I could barely open my jaw properly. I did end up taking a pain killer for those days. I almost wanted to not wear them because they were quite... strenuous. BUT PERSEVERANCE!
The good news is Friday to now has been a lot better. I think as I slept with the elastic, my mouth is getting more used to it and it’s not so bad. I can put them on without using a mirror now, or that plastic handle to help. It takes a bit of fidgeting but it’s usually pretty fast.
Apparently you’re also supposed to change them every 5 hours or so? As elastics lose their strength after a certain amount of time... So I’ve been changing them throughout the day.
I’ve also managed to snap an elastic in my mouth. It doesn’t hurt. I’ve been wearing it basically all the time when I’m not eating. AND there’s a gap between my incisor and the canine now because of the elastic, yay it’s working! Side note: braces are still not glow in the dark. Very sad about that. ;_:
Hey im 17 and ive had braces for 8 months, and I haven't been wearing my elastics very often.. do they really make a big difference? like will my dentist be able to tell that I haven't been wearing my elastics a lot?
Thanks for your question! Yes, unfortunately elastics are important. Your dentist will defiantly be able to tell if you don’t wear your elastics, as he/she will see that they haven’t moved the amount they would have if you wore them. Elastics help speed up the process of having braces, therefore the more you wear them the faster your braces process will be. If you don’t like wearing elastics I recommend that you only wear them at night- this is a good compromise as it’ll be beneficiary as well as the fact people don’t have to see you wearing them. Although if your dentist has said to wear them full time it’d be best if you did as your teeth will only respond to you wearing elastics for a minimum of 6 hours, therefore it won’t make a difference if you wear them for less than that. I know how horrible elastics can be but its worth using them as otherwise you’ll just be unnecessarily prolonging your process of wearing braces! Hope this helps!
