The Shorpy page from which this image comes is full of interesting comments, and also the assembled panorama (bottom photo) which is pretty much the way Detroit Publishing wanted to preserve the scene when the took the original series of seven glass-plate 8″x10″ negatives.

When asked how we could stand the constant smoky smell, natives would say: "Smells like money to me."
