I'm gonna try an experiment.
I want to get better at daydreaming. Usually i just repeat the same short scene over and over in my head, but I want to be able to thoroughly explore places in my imagination. So i'm going to practice! I'll record my progress here under its own tag, but here's what i'm going to be working on!
Longer continuous focus
More detailed imagery
bringing more of my senses into my daydreams
improving my mental kinesthesia
and anything else that pops up along the way!
So that's my newest task. I'll post any progress i make, which i hope i will, so I'll have a lot of things to post about as i get better at it! I've made a scale for different aspects of my daydreams that i'll be working on to keep track of how i'm doing, which will be kept on my blog on a little chart in my sidebar! I'll make another post about that when I get it finished.
Academe me
Dear Friends,
I'm sorry for the late invite, but I want everybody on the internet to be a part of my academic adventures. We're going into Week 2, and things are gonna get hairy. I need your beautiful internet brains working in perfect synchrony with mine, if we're going to get straight A's and be geniuses.
If you don't know: I'm going for a BS in Math at New Mexico State University. This will be my second degree. The first one is by now a more or less worthless piece of paper. Actually it's not even a piece of paper, because they never sent it to me! I'm still kind of bitter about that, but it may be related to all the other consequences of not taking my graduation very seriously. Anyway, moving forward.
We're taking Calculus, Proofs, Biology, and Astrobiology. Don't worry, we're not even into the calculus part of calculus yet, biology and astrobiology are going to be a breeze, and I love doing proofs. That class is taught by a husband and wife team. While the husband bumbles around at the board making a mess of things, his wife tries to augment the confusion and despair by nagging loudly from the back of the room. It's a good time.
Where do you come in? What I'm really excited about is taking out obscure books from the library and trying to understand them, which may even lead to little mini research projects. I'll be posting my thoughts and progress as we go. Right now I've decided I'm into the theory of measurement. I know, it doesn't sound very sexy, but I'm convinced there's something worthwhile there. I'm reading Scientific Representation: Paradoxes of Perspective by Bas van Fraassen and Basic Concepts of Measurement by Brian Ellis. That's just FYI. Don't bother looking for them out in decent society. They say things like
The representing in question also need not be, and in general is not, a case of mimesis; rather, measuring locates the target in a theoretically constructed logical space. (van Fraassen)
I get excited about this sort of thing, and maybe some of you do too. I think that's enough for now. Let's go get awesome in our brains!
Love, Chris
