it's been a slow day for sloan. the cold means fewer people are willing to get out of the comfort of their houses, which means that, for once, she was able to gain some ground in her ongoing war with stephanie mayer. oh yeah, she's gotten to new moon... and is immediately in need of a distraction. 

that's how you get to a purposefully rattling question to the only one foolish enough to still make himself present: "you ever get so disappointed by what you find that you leave modern stuff for the next explorer person? you know, so they won't feel as bad".

     ‘ at this rate, i may as well go back. ’    bennie interrupts, voice gone dry and mean and completely exhausted. her eyes should be bruised with how dark the shadows are beneath them. ( the fact that one of them actually is does nothing to improve matters. ) and it’s nothing personal, this. she’s grateful for the stars, for the freedom he’s lent her to see them again. it’s only that it’s been three hours already and the night hasn’t gotten any younger. 

     ‘ how much longer is your friend going to be? ’

     ‘ golly moses, they really did a number on you, didn’t they? ’ tracy drifts in close, raising her hand and allowing the back of it hover a hair’s breadth from his cheek. ‘ you know, i’m going to have to speak with your partner, marion, sweetheart. ’ the red bow of her mouth droops as she continues her scrutiny. ‘ i thought you were pulling my leg. ’

( meme. accepting! ) @brainfare asked: you took almost 40 minutes to get here when you thought i was gonna die? 

     ‘ are you actually going to hold that over me? ’     marion is lucky she’s got a road ahead to keep her gaze mostly caught, but unlucky enough to sit within her grasp. she reaches a hand out and lands a light punch against his knee, then shoots him a pinched look when she’s able. ‘ do you know how fast i was going? ’ she shouldn’t be snapping back. she’s not the one with a fresh set of stitches in her leg, but even still -- postmortem worry will manifest as it wants, when it wants, and how it wants. ‘ it’s not my fault you decided to get all cozy with death the one night i drive out to birmingham, is it. ’ bennie’s knuckles go white against the steering wheel, and her voice falls soft enough to hide beneath the radio.

     ‘ you scared me, you asshole. ’

     ‘ marion, darling -- ’ jeremy tilts into the office on light feet, the floating cut short only by the temporary worry that flits through him. is he being too familiar? really -- it doesn’t do them any good to let things turn sour, does it? (even if only by subconscious means.) he allows the worry to run through him like a stream, flicks it off the hem of his sleeve when he flips the chair in front of marion’s desk, and sits down across from him (forward but backwards). 

     ‘ your associates are being flighty again. ’

     colter’s entrance is announced by way of a brief rap of knuckles against the door frame. he doesn’t bother to wait for permission before stepping inside the office. ‘ that girlfriend of yours finally feeding you right? ’ he asks by way of greeting, setting a neatly folded paper bag on the edge of marion’s desk. there’s a twitch of a smile, something with a considerable dose of fond meanness (but mostly genuine delight at the glimpse of healthy change).
