when i was 19

two weeks after 9/11, i took a train to louisville, kentucky to move there. my mom was freaking me out the most, and i wasn't getting along with my dad. my mother was just watching the news on repeat and turned into a robot with hardly any emotion and i had a really hard time dealing with it.

i was living temporarily with a large group of folks in a apartment complex. the complex had such weird perks; it was right near a mall - like very short walking distance-so i was able to apply for jobs relatively quickly. there was also an empty apartment that a person had rented out to dance in the window rather provocatively. they would put on a phantom of the opera mask and dance in this completely empty apartment, with no blinds or shades. we would all run to see them dance and it was just so bizarre and amazing.

i took a greyhound to california to take the ride back to louisville with a friend from the internet, whom i ended up becoming really great friends with, who was moving in with me. her family had money, which i was never really around, and i helped her drive an suv across the country though i didn't have a license. i think i might have lied to her though, but honestly i don't remember. actually, this is all fuzzy. i can't remember if she was in louisville already or if i took the greyhound alone.

anyway, after she moved in, i paid $50 for my walk-in closet. we stole a lot of books and made makeshift shelves out of cardboard and thin rope; that was her idea. i could have kept the books on the floor, i didn't really care. we both worked at toys-r-us , 3rd shift. we'd ride skateboard at midnight to a bus in the shadiest area, hop on the bus and arrive at work. i thought the guy building the bikes and toys was the dreamiest, ever. he had really fucked up teeth and had a faint body odor, all of the time. he was also a little nervous. i am pretty confident he liked my friend and i didn't even care. he'd drive us to this janky skatepark in the morning, we'd all skate and then head back home to sleep.

we drove across the country to follow a hardcore band, it was fucking amazing. again - maybe, we followed the band right after i arrived in los angeles. i can't remember, but that isn't really important. new years eve, we went to a tattoo and piercing party/convention in toronto; we ate food, took photos and left. this was a little after we picked up d, who was dating my friend. i'm not sure if they were meeting for the first time off of the internet or if it was their second, but d was/isfucking rad.

we arrived back and all worked at a health food store. i was in the kitchen, prepping food and selling over-priced health foods to snobby folks. they were at the registers. that job was so rad in so many ways; there were a ton of perks, including, realllly big discounts on vegan food, haha. we all used to ride skateboards and just fuck around and go to shows. we broke into this one building that was an old factory. we had ideas of making hats from items we found but we never did. i'd make dinner for everyone out of food from the trash. i was freegan back then, and looked forward to the weekly donuts we found in one dumpster.

i took a greyhound to visit some guy in idaho that i was pretty obsessed with. of course, i met him off of the internet. i jerked him off, and possibly gave him head. honestly, can't remember the exact detail. but i also bled in his bed when i got my period in the middle of the night. i left and never really spoke to him again. i think i was really heart broken, but  i can't remember exactly how i was feeling. i do remember feeling super embarrassed about bleeding in his sheets though.i listened to a cassette tape on the way back with the promise ring and some other 90's emo.

i made some one shot zines after that trip in the kitchen. the kitchen became my bedroom (that i was now spending $33/month on) because my friends, were having sex all of the time and i just didn't want to sleep next to them while they were fucking. i dragged in a couch that smelled like cat urine into the kitchen and slept on it.

well someone got arrested, my close friends moved, i got pretty depressed and decided to move back to brooklyn to go to culinary school. i never did go to culinary school, but i can still bake some mean vegan chocolate chip cookies.

zero drafts+art

in the writing workshop i took during this past summer (2011), i learned about zero drafts and they changed my life. i am such a perfectionist and perfectionism mixed in with general "blech"ness is a godawful mixture. it prevents me from doing a lot of things; in the pursuit of perfectionism and a fear of not producing THE BEST thing/piece/whatever, i just don't do anything, and get really annoyed with myself. when there are layers of this self inertia, it is difficult to get started on anything.

so, zero drafts. zero drafts are messy "i don't give a fuck what comes of this" stream of consciousness or a collection of words to help jump start writing projects. while some times it takes a few weeks for me to remember about the magical world of zero drafts, when i do, it is amazing!

tonight, i did something different and used the concept of zero drafts for my art! feeling a little insecure with my art (especially after seeing who else is working on the feminist cards project - what awesome artists!) and mixing that with my general "blech"ness, perfectionism, and crazy life in general, i have been freaking myself out all week about creating FUCKINGINCREDIBLE masterpieces. so tonight, i drank some coffee and did a zero draft with my art! i opened up a fresh page in my BIG sketchbook, and just started drawing and writing concept ideas i had for beth ditto, and wow, i think i actually created a rad as fuck concept that i need to clean up and get to working on.

i really like playing with symbolism, crazy colors, drips, and playfulness, and i think once i clean up the ideas i have and put them all together, this result will be rad as hell.

tomorrow, i am going to be on the lookout for a cool canvas for it! i have a couple of canvases in frames, which is what i am looking for with all three of the cards - but i am going to seek out some more. i love old frame and painting on top of weird paintings/images. i am also going to think about what colors to use, which will be determined upon find the right frame and canvas!
