Just in time for the season, Terror Threads has released two The Houses October Built shirts, designed by Corey Thomas, for $27. They've also turned Toto6's artwork from last year into an 18x24 poster (pictured below) for $20.

Blu-ray Review: The Houses October Built 2

The Houses October Built was an ingenious concept - a found footage movie about haunted houses that mixed footage filmed at actual haunts with scripted content - but its execution was questionable. Nevertheless, it connected with enough viewers to warrant a sequel. With the same team in front of and behind the camera for the sequel, I was eager to see if they could harness the subject's enormous potential to deliver something scary on the second time around.

Unfortunately, The Houses October Built 2 is more of the same - and now it no longer has the benefit of novelty on which to lean. It picks up right where the previous film left off, providing a resolution to that story, before jumping to the next Halloween season. With the footage of her harrowing experience with the roaming underground haunt known as the Blue Skeleton hitting the internet, Brandy (Brandy Schaefer) is now a viral star known as “coffin girl.”

Her friends - Zack (Zack Andrews), Mikey (Mikey Roe), Bobby (Bobby Roe), and Jeff (Jeff Larson) - convince Brandy to join them on a promotional tour as haunted house aficionados. After promising her that there will be no stops at “extreme” haunts this year, they load into an RV, armed with cameras, and hit the road. Along the way, they keep hearing about a mysterious new haunt called Hellbent, and the guys - who clearly learned nothing from their previous ordeal - are intrigued.

The Houses October Built 2 once again utilizes the found footage format, but there are more video sources this time around: cell phone video chats, news footage, dash cam footage, a drone. But it commits a cardinal sin of found footage: some of the video is illogical as to who is filming. Beyond an upgrade to high definition cameras, the film is much more produced than its predecessor. The higher production value is nice, but the more cinematic approach detracts from the raw, kinetic energy that made the first film work. It's also edited together like a traditional film, rather than being presented as if it were discovered, and is accompanied by a score.

Like the first film, The Houses October Built 2's plot is paper thin; it largely relies on footage from actual haunts to maintain viewers' engagement. But - because Brandy refuses to go to traditional haunted houses - they attend events that are more like fun spectacles, such as a zombie 5K run and a brain eating contest featuring record-breaking competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi. Not only is it monotonous and overlong at 101 minutes, but it completely loses the organic approach. Even worse, the segments end up feeling more like commercials than movie scenes.

Bobby Roe returns to the director’s chair, working from a script he co-wrote with Andrews. While I typically champion original cast members returning for a sequel, The Houses October Built's characters constantly made foolishly unrealistic decisions, and there is zero character growth across either film. They're also unlikable on top of that, making it difficult to care about their fates.

The Blu-ray release of the film includes four deleted scenes, all of which were removed for good reason (especially the laughable rap song); the uncut projection scene; a slideshow of photos taken on location during production; and the “Halloween Spooks” music video featuring footage from the film.

The haunts and events explored in The Houses October Built 2 could make for an interesting documentary, but not so much as a narrative feature. Similar to the first film, the horror elements doesn't come into play until the last act, but it lacks the claustrophobic feel. The sequel's lone improvement over its predecessor is that it offers a more satisfying payoff. Otherwise, it's difficult to recommend The Houses October Built 2 to anyone who didn’t love the original.

The Houses October Built 2 will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on January 2 via RLJE Films.
