“as many haunts as we can, all across america.”
The Houses October Built | 2014 | Bobby Roe
The Houses October Built (2014) is a found-footage film about a group of friends who go on a road trip across the south in search of the most extreme haunted house attraction. Eventually, they find it: a haunt so underground, its name is a secret. Once you know that much, the haunt has probably already started.
Haunted house attractions like this seem ripe for a horror movie treatment. You hear stories about actors who take it too far, and even places where participants are aware that they’re basically signing up to be abused. That’s where The Houses October Built succeeds, because it feels real. Yes, the clown mask is scary, but what’s scarier is that there’s a real person under there. The group of characters are also pretty well-written, with a few that you like, and others you like to hate.
The ending was pretty lackluster. You know the movie is building up to a haunt that’s real, but the group gets split up all at once, the shaky cam becomes a blur, and it all feels rote and abrupt. Still, everything before that was a pretty fun ride.
