A member of the Araliaceae family Brassaiopsis dumicola is a shrub or tree, growing to 9 m tall. The native range of this species is China (Yunnan) to North Vietnam and here it is growing in the protection of a temperate glasshouse.

The Trailfinders’ 50th Anniversary Garden at the Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show, London, was inspired by the plants of Nepal and the wider Himalayan region. There was a diverse range of plants including Brassaiopsis mitis with this distinctive foliage. This is an upright, deciduous tree with a spiny trunk that is described as only borderline hardy.
