You must always have brasses on your horses’ harnesses to keep away the devil. Ringing of brass objects to keep evil at bay is common across many cultures. Churches have bells. The Chinese believed the sound of brass instruments was particularly terrifying to devils, so gongs were used in their ancient rites of exorcism. In Japan, undertakers were given a brass ring by the family of the deceased which he wore fastened to his right arm until the burial. It was believed to guard the undertaker from the spirit of the dead.
