> How to understand the idea of marginality in Brazilian Cultural situation? What does it mean to be a marginal in Brazil in the 60's? 

> How did the musicians, filmmakers, and artists deal with the Brazilian sexuality and popular culture during the 60's?

The image of the marginal perpetrated by the elites is of evil bandits, when in reality, to be a marginal is to be on the margin of something. Those in the center are the ones who establish the norm, therefore they are the right ones, so anyone that falls too far from it are marginals.

To be a marginal in the 60's during a time of dictatorship is an act of resistance. As journalists, professors and artists were being chased by the government, being a marginal and drifting way from the established norm was a positive thing. The idea of marginality in Brazil is to be an outlaw, which could be seen with good eyes at a time of government oppression but under a democracy is often perceive as wrongful.

The vanguards of the 60's were against conformity and importing culture from foreign countries. They advocated for the production of our own culture and valued the ability to blend elements from other cultures into our own. Like that, we begin to see elements of popular culture being incorporated to foreign trends, like Bossa Nova that derived from jazz and blues and the birth of the Tropicalia Movement. Also in the cinema, Hollywood characters were often portrayed very ironically in the plots.

As eroticism is intrinsic to art and a movement of sexual liberation was happening all over the Western countries in the 60's, Brazil was no different. Incorporating sexuality in art was a way of subverting the Cristian moral of the society. The ''pornô chanchada'' was only a branch of the Cinema Marginal, but as it's commercial interest was much higher than any other type of movie produced by the movement, the filmmakers decided to invest more in the branch. Of course the person naked was usually a woman, so what was meant to be innovative and break norms conformed to the same old patriarchal mold of society.
