Rebecca Schmucker ex-Amish Q&A (Part 2 of 2)
OMG reality television
So one of my “I’m home sick and don’t feel like doing anything” guilty pleasures is TLC shows. And I’m watching Breaking Amish right now; which, this show alternates between batshit crazy and weirdly sweet.
Anyway, one of the women is pregnant this season. In past seasons, we’ve seen her go through a heroin addiction and she is now in recovery. But for reasons that we don’t fully know, DCF (department of children and family) has taken custody of her son at least twice; he’s currently in the state’s custody and an order has been issued to take custody of her baby after it is born.
So, she has said repeatedly during the season that she wants to have a home birth because that way, DCF won’t know about the baby being born for awhile. And she figures that when they do find out, she can show them how good she has done and how healthy and happy the baby is and that will make them change their mind about taking it. And give her back her older child to boot.
I cannot TELL you how BAD an idea this is from beginning to end; but seriously, quasi-kidnapping your infant child is not a good way to convince DCF that you are ready for custody again. Especially since I would bet the court order requires her to notify DCF of the child’s birth so by not doing that, she is also probably committing another (more serious) material breach of her agreements with DCF.
Side Note: I really hope that PA is a state that appoints attorneys to people in termination of parental rights cases; she is absolutely the textbook example of why that is important because there’s just no way she could effectively advocate for herself against experienced attorneys from DCF and the state.
Not to mention that she is literally on methadone so there are really good odds that her baby will probably have to be in NICU after birth to treat any symptoms of withdrawal. And seriously, I feel bad for this woman and her ignorance, but her actual quote was “my medicine is prescribed to me by my doctor so it can’t be bad for my baby.” Aaaargh.
Rebecca from Breaking/Return to Amish isn't very active on social media, but she did a rare Q&A yesterday that I found super interesting! She answered questions about the show as well as an about the old order Amish in general.
(Part 1 of 2)
I know like 0 people follow for my Return to Amish content but I'm watching the newest season and just can't help myself;
So yea the whole thing that they do where the Amish girls go into a supermarket and are just *blown away* by the pre-washed vegetables and everything is 100000000% FaLsE
I'm in a small town and I regularly shop in either 1. XL Walmart 2. Smaller Kroger offshoot that has better wine 3. Aldi and I regularly see the old order Amish in each place (more at Aldi bc of prices and location but that's besides the point). Amish kids, women, and men pretty regularly frequent 'English' stores (we also see them at Lowes constantly). Also maybe it's a Midwestern Amish thing but literally none of them call us 'Englishers', it's either 'the English' or the Pennsylvania Dutch/German version of that.
My main point is that this is also a TLC show and I like to note it whenever I can confirm that they're telling a straight up lie, which with their Amish shows is *very* often.
breaking amish/return to amish has always been pretty fake but the newest season is soooooooOoooooo fake I can't even enjoy it in a trash tv way
well I guess I'm going to rewatch Breaking Amish because apparently I love frustration and pain
