Thank you for the tag, @toboldlywrite! I actually worked on my book a bit today so here’s something original for you guys!

It was the human half of Evitestefillodio. He could see him, just for a moment, pale and shaking, fighting against the darkness, trying to get into his light, hand outstretched, reaching for the cage, swallowed up by the darkness.

Warnings: demonic/hell themes, blood, violence, purposeful use of cringey tropes

Stage: First Draft

Wordcount: 85,181

Synopsis: A precog, Timely, hires Maxia, a half demon, and Ralucad, a vampire, to rescue them from being kidnapped by a powerful demon who plans to use Timely’s abilities to plunge the world into a literal Hell.  

Characters: 

Cradle - A trans female witch who works with stone magic and will stop at nothing to keep her sibling, Timely, safe. 

Illidan - A mortal woman’s soul which was placed inside a sentient sword. She does not really approve of this. 

Grimm/Maxia - A trans male half demon who, while trained from a young age to fight demons, still gets nervous around others. 

Ralucad - A trans male vampire who knew Maxia as a child and runs an antique shop that has a lot of weapons in the basement.  

TImely - a nonbinary precog who was once a normal human but was affected by spending too much time around magic. 

Glossary: 

Amortiguador - (Shock Absorber) dampener for some magical/demonic abilities though it is more often used to protect nonhumans from the affects of surrounding magics 

Aramio - (Wire) animalistic demons that act more like snakes of razorwire than anything sentient. 

Cabaleiro - (Knight) eight to ten foot tall demon warriors that have the ability to heal themselves through pain, to create weapons, and store their souls away from later use

Fadar - (Fairy) also known as Imps these are small demons who can only feel one emotion at a time

Hellmouth - A massive portal to Hell that cannot be closed through conventional methods but are more often sealed away instead. 

Incubo - A demon that feeds off of sexual energy that is created from someone beneath them. 

Limbo - The first layer of Hell, reserved for those who have yet to be baptized or find a faith

Mestura - (Mix) a creature that is a mix of different types of demons or something other than demonic, as long as there are noticeable demonic traits. 

Parvo - (Dumb) mindless drones created by demons out of smoke and dust to fulfill basic instructions. 

Porteiro Embassy- (doorman) An organisation that fights for peace between humans, demons, and angels, they have their headquarters hidden on top of the hellmouth. 

Precog - Someone who has visions of the future without being given visions from an external source

Soldado - (Soldier) a human sized lower demon that is highly trained and resilient but only have enough magic to create small bouts of armor or weaponry

Sucubo - A demon that feeds off of the sexual energy poured into them. 

True Sight - The ability to see things as they really are instead of the way that it is made easier for mundane mortals to understand. 

Versubo - A demon that feeds off of sexual energy

Xeodabarba - (Beard Ice) a type of demon that has low hanging horns on their chins and prefer ice magics. They are found on the ninth level of Hell. 

Xestor - (manager) a lower level demon who has no actual ingrained magical skill but can train in any. They are often in charge of small groups of other low level demons

Yatagan - a curved Armenian sword

Naibus left Maxia in the center of a large room, the floor much like a great golden platter. He could still hear the sounds of feeding from the other rooms, could smell pheromones and hormones and sweat. There was an underlying element of blood beneath everything that made his blood tingle and his desires heightened. Everything around him had this echo to it in appearance, feeling both further and closer at the same time.

“You, young one, are being consumed by your own feelings,” Naibus explained, going behind one of the walls of mirrors. “It is something that makes you less of a demon and more of an animal, quite unsightly.”

He rolled his shoulders, his fur rolling like waves with it. His hands were massive and clawed, made for tearing. He wanted to test them. He wanted to be tested. What she was saying was true and the animal reveled in her words like they were praise while the other part of him, his human half, buried deep beneath his huge frame, clutched at himself, disgusted by his own failings.

She came back from around the mirror, carrying a pile of fabrics. “You need to learn to embrace it, to use it for your betterment. I would expect that you would have had years to try to befriend yourself but it’s not every day that you lose your human blood.”

Naibus held out the fabric. In an instant, all Maxia wanted to do with it was tear it apart. He reached, claws twitching, for it, but she must have realized that he would not treat her things kindly. Instead she set it down on one of the lounges that sat around the room, running her hands over his snout as she did. Her hands were hot and he whimpered at the feeling, lashing out with his claws.

She cackled, pulling her hands away from him. He was nowhere near reaching her. She was too far away, her thin arms quick and fluid. He couldn’t catch her and his tail wagged quickly as he snapped his jaw.

“That’s cute but, you see, you are without rationality when you are only moving by instinct. You don’t want to hurt me, you want my help. Ralucad understands that he must make sacrifices in this place and, I’m sure you do as well since he put you in this state. Do you want to be better?”

Maxia’s demonic form finally agreed with him, allowing him to whimper in agreement. He didn’t want to be this. He didn’t want to be violent. He wanted his mind back.

Naibus touched him again, hands on his jaw, hands on his wrists, pulling her face down and close. He could bite it. It would be so easy. She was so close. She didn’t care for her well being. He could tear her apart.

He couldn’t move from her grip.

He growled and twisted, shaking like a pitbull, like a shark, but instead of having prey between his teeth it was himself in a trap and no matter how he moved he couldn’t be free. She had him. It was all lost. He was the prey after all. There was nothing he could do.

“Stop that!” Naibus hissed and he stilled, whimpering, staring up at her. “You’re ut going to hurt yourself. You need to gain control, listen to my words, to my voice.”

Her voice was beautiful in the way of a trained singers, just before a performance. Not singing, but about to. It rolled deeply over him, running like fingers through his fur.

“Close your eyes.”

He closed the gray one then the red. Everything was a deep dark red, specks of whatever lived on his eyelids dancing against what light came through. He breathed through his nose. That sent was so cloying, taking him over.

“Its dark and there’s nothing around you, nothing to fight, nothing to be afraid of.”

The red faded to black. There was nothing. He was floating. He did not feel her hands on him. He did not hear what was happening in the other rooms. It was just him in the cool black void, a beautiful voice resting on his shoulders like a cape.

“You are in the darkness, not this beast but you. He is all alone in here, wanting to be free. You put him in a cage, didn’t you?”

There was a white square in the middle of the darkness. It was a cell with glass walls. It was too bright to look into but Maxia knew what was inside. There was a conscience in there, a human being, his other half. The half that was always in control.

“Do you have the key?”

He looked down at his hand. There were two hands there. There was the massive clawed one, edged in lush brown fur, and there was a human one, small and bright, made out of light. It looked smaller than it should have been. Floating above his hands was a stone, just a chipped off chunk of granite. It spun in the void.

Maxia took another look around. He didn’t know where to start. There was nothing there, nothing anywhere, other than the mounds of the damned. He doubted they would have any idea on how to help and they would probably be unable to if they tried.

“We are free here, aren’t we?” Maxia asked, “We can move about, this sin is not ours? That marble thing, it said that it would be easier for us to leave if this isn’t our personal sin or, that’s how I took it anyway.”

“Lust for sex?” Ralucad shrugged, “Of that I’m fairly without sin, lust for other things though? That may be a bit harder for me, I’ll admit.”

“I’m ace, so I’m good in that department.”

Ralucad kicked the rock, letting it tumble as far as it could before the wind picked it up and made it turn awkwardly. “We could just wander round until I completely lose myself and kill you, if you like.”

Maxia stared at him, the fur on his back rising and his teeth sharpening. He said it so casually, though his body showed that he was serious, with how it was shaking, with how his features were slowly changing, growing more cavernous and monstrous. He didn’t look like himself, like he’d been vacuum sealed and was now just a skinny horrible thing.

“Let’s not do that,” Maxia suggested, lifting his head and sniffing the air. It was the smell of blood that was affecting Ralucad so much, it coming so easily even though it was old and constrained within the memories of bodies that these souls still possessed. The wind coming from their left was a little bit less, didn’t try to blow them off course. “We’re going that way.”

Maxia turned so that the wind was against his back, pushing him in that direction. It was still blindly searching, but it was something, at least. He didn’t have a key, though he didn’t know how badly he would need one. Doors were all different here, he had no way of preparing for one until he reached it. He just hoped that they reached it soon.

He didn’t want to have to fight Ralucad.

Ralucad stayed close to him though it was clear that he was faltering, each step a little bit slower than the last. Maxia would stop every once in a while, let him catch up. But Ralucad’s eyes were stuck on the motions beneath them, his nose constantly searching out blood.

Maxia almost reached out and took him by the shoulder in order to lead him, but he changed his mind last minute, knowing that Ralucad would feel his pulse and be worse off for it.

“Why did they think they needed me?” Ralucad murmured as he caught up with Maxia again. “Timely, that is. They said both of us were needed for their rescue and yet, here I am, slowing you down. I have done nothing, as of yet, that aids you or has benefited their rescue.”

“I doubt we’ll ever know,” Maxia shrugged. “Maybe you just haven’t done whatever your purpose is yet and maybe it’s something more subtle than that. I mean, as shitty as all this is, I am glad I’m not alone here.”

Ralucad just shrugged at that.

The mounds of bodies were the last refuges for the souls of the fallen. They clung to one another, reaching out and grabbing at any others that flew past them, trying to add to their mass. It was an attempt to undo what was meant to be done in this place, to create security, some place to just sit and breath, without being buffeted around. There were some Xestor moving from mound to mound, pitchforks in hand, pushing into the mound and prying the weeping souls away from one another, freeing them to all lose one another into the wind.

Drawing closer to them made their screams more audible, though they were also ripped away and cast aside by the wind. The Xestor had no compassion for them, would not be demons if they did, and Maxia shivered as they drew near. He wanted to do something, as much as he pretended that he didn’t. Ralucad wasn’t looking at the bodies, nude and squirming, and Maxia didn’t know if that was because some of them had been pierced and bloodied with the prongs of pitchforks or if it was due to their position.

There was nothing that they could do, this was Hell and it was the way that it was for a reason, as abhorrent as that was. Even trying would bring them nothing but enemies.
