#breaking the spell

So I'm reading this book that's an atheist arguing for a scientific look into religion as a cultural phenomenon as it is unique to our species. He questions if religion has played a part in the evolutionary success of the human race, or if it at all impacts our ability to thrive, for better or for worse.

I love the idea of studying religion as a factor of evolutionary success, and I do love reading from skeptic viewpoints, but this author is almost laughable with his tone.

I've not gotten through a quarter of this book so I'll not write a whole review just yet but I find it hilarious when atheist authors claim to be so unbiased and yet spill all their prejudices out on every page.

How can you say you don't believe in religion, any aspect of religion, but believe that Satan is evil? How can you display your blatant Islamophobia and call yourself neutral?

I will continue reading this because the science itself is interesting, even if the authors condensending tone and obvious prejudices make me roll my eyes ever other page.

I’ve decided to make a short film/music video starring Maurice and his sorcerer

It’ll be synced up to my absolute favourite song of all time: Breaking The Spell by Pendragon (again, legendary prog rock band, highly recommend them). Lyrically, it just works really well.

It’ll start with the sorcerer as a young boy visiting a shop to choose his familiar. He’s at first besotted by all the typical brown bats, but then sees Maurice, the odd one out bc of his orange fur, and chooses him. The film then shows a long montage of their lives through the years, as we watch the sorcerer grow from a child to a teenager, to an adult. Relationships flourish and fade, different stages of life have their ups and downs, but the sorcerer and Maurice remain as close as brothers all throughout. And it finally ends with the now elderly sorcerer bequeathing his magic hats to Maurice. Maurice flies off into the future, the sorcerer’s spirit at his side.

I’ve always wanted to create a project with that song bc it’s kept me going through some of the darkest times of my life, and this seems like the perfect opportunity to do it. Ofc I’d have to get the rights from the band members, but I’ve licensed music before so I know how to do it (might cost a bit in terms of royalties tho).
