When Elena was only seven years old, she had to deal for the first time with the cruelty of an adult who would mark her life forever. One day she was playing at a neighbor’s house. Suddenly, Dora, her friend's mom received a visit. Elena was distracted playing and not interested in this lady. However, she overheard a conversation that will remember until today at 56 years old.
- "Dora come tonight with your husband, is going to be a fun reunion"
- "Sorry, can not go, we have no one to look after the girls"
- Dora’s friend looked at Elena in a way that she felt restless and heard her say, "Come on, leave the girls with the ‘sirvientica’"
Sirvientica, is a Spanish word meaning servant, but the tone in which it is said is quite derogatory. Although Dora rushed to whisper that Elena was her neighbor’s daughter, Elena felt something ache inside and was very sad. Whenever Elena was excluded from any group, she assumed those words were true and the reason of being rejected. Over time, Elena realized that this is what is called "self-esteem" and that she was hurt because always felt less and ordinary, lacking of beauty and grace.
Elena had a daughter, Laura. All her life she has enjoyed make up and do her friends’ hair, do massages, among others. Gradually, on Laura’s mind, it was forming a dream about having her own SPA.
One day Elena told Laura about the experience she had when small and how it had marked her life. When Laura heard the story for the first time from the lips of her mom, she felt sadness and anger. She realized how fragile human beings are and how a life can be easily affected by intrusive, bad-intentioned or discriminatory comments. Without realizing it, Laura's dream of having a SPA was structured in her mind. She saw clearly that the SPA could be approached in a different way that would help people that, like her mother, have low self-esteem. Her dream of having a SPA would have a dual purpose that would generate a double satisfaction, it could not only help people become more gorgeous on the outside but also to feel safer and beautiful on the inside.
Having low self-esteem is more common than we all think, some accept it and some do not; when you give that first step, you can make a tremendous difference in your life. Cheer yourself up to tell your experiences and share with others what you feel, what you want to be and what would you be willing to change in your life to be a happier and beautiful human being.
