Other Breath Sounds

Wheezing + prolonged expiratory phase (obstructive diseases)- expiratory phase, problem getting air out, DOES NOT CLEAR WITH COUGH

Ronchi (middle chest)- hear with lots of secretions, clears with cough! COPD, CF

Crackles- very end of inspiration, like hair against ear

NO CHARACTERISTIC SOUND FOR ATELECTASIS!

                                              Breath Sounds:

Wheezing is a high-pitched whistling sound that can occur during respiration. A wheeze is generated when air flows through narrowed smaller respiratory airways, such as the bronchioles. However, wheezes can also be heard due to obstructions is the larger upper airways as well.

Rhonchus breath sounds are usually lower in pitch and have a snoring quality but sometimes can also be heard as a wheeze that can be cleared with a cough especially if the cough is productive. Rhonchi is nearly always caused by secretions within the larger bronchial airways.

Fine Crackles, sometimes called Rales, they heard as small clicking, bubbling, or rattling sounds in the lung during respiration. It is believed to occur when air opens a closed air space. Crackles/Rales can be further described as moist, dry, coarse, or in the example provided, fine crackles.
