GRAND CANAL
by Breeze1
Beginning around 2000 bc Southern Arizona was home to the agricultural civilzation of the Huhugam (Hohokam) peoples. The Salt and Gila Rivers that once flowed through the land around modern day Phoenix were critical to survival and from those the Hohokam engineered the largest and most sophisticated irrigation system in the Americas—hand digging more than 1,000 miles of canals over as much as 110,000 acres. Invited to paint this mural on the side of Joe's Diner next to Phoenix's Grand Canal, Thomas "Breeze" Marcus used a water theme to serve as a tribute and reminder of the area's Akimel O’odham (River People) and those that came before.
