"LA MUSA"

Originally motivated by his passion for architecture Tempe, Arizona, artist Clyde began his artistic journey a decade ago and describes his work as "characterized by a combination of realism and skewed patterns creating perplexity in the image and wonder in the tactics." In 2019 Clyde painted model/muse @AmandaBlair for the en Hance Park Condos on N 2nd in Phoenix. The mural is dedicated to the many quirks of a city he is inspired by, and includes five foot tall renderings of a few of his neighborhood photos turned into luggage stickers.

"NO MORE STOLEN SISTERS"

In the U.S. Native American women suffer violence at more than double the rate of any other group and one in three is sexually assaulted during her life—perpetrated predominantly by other races and ethnicities. In Canada the rate is even higher and a 2014 report also found that more than 1,000 indigenous women had been murdered over the previous three decades. Lucinda Hinojos, aka La Morena, says she finds inspiration for her work in issues of oppression and the loss of rights affecting her community, family, and friends. In early 2019 the Arizona artist of Xicana, Pima, Apache, and Yaqui descent learned more of the plight of the #MMIW in the days leading up to "National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls." La Morena's finished wall featuring 15-year-old BellaRose is behind @TheChurchillPHX in the Phoenix alley off of Garfield St, behind 901 N First St.

ELECTRIK NEEDLE TATTOO

Wielding an impressive combination of design and art skills, tattoo artists around the country are also responsible for a growing volume of urban art. Once apprenticing at @ElectrikNeedleTattoo , Prescott Valley tattoo artist Rudy Jaime expressed his appreciation to former mentor, Cookie, for allowing him to keep the Electrik Needle legacy alive when he expanded to a second location and brought the name back to Phoenix. Specializing in colorful "neo-traditional" tattoo work Jaime has also added many mural pieces to the public space—he’s always on the lookout for new opportunities—and in late-2018 created what continues to be one of his favorites on this wall outside the Phoenix studio at N 11th and Grand Avenues.  @rudyelectrikneedle/

“JUST ME AND HOBBES"

Syndicated from 1985 to 1995 and appearing in more than 2,400 papers, Bill Watterson's "Calvin and Hobbes"—following a precocious boy and his stuffed tiger, often poking fun at art and academia—has been called "the last great newspaper comic." Growing up Champ Styles wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father, Tempe graffiti artist @_SuchStyles, and today when Champ is not leading the art efforts of 2nd Wind Games and Onyx Dynamics you may well find him wielding a spray can with his dad, or off painting his own creations on a wall somewhere around town. In early 2018 Champ added this Hobbes creation to the outdoor gallery of Danelle Plaza on W Southern Ave for Tempe live music and craft beer watering hole, @YuccaTapRoom.  @champ_styles/

CALLE 16 ARTS DISTRICT

Thomas Marcus, aka Breeze, was introduced to graffiti at 13 and has been painting graffiti around Phoenix since the early ‘90s. While he continues to write Breeze has spent the years since developing his art, painting permissioned murals and dedicating himself to art programs and projects for the youth of his community. Breeze says his designs recall the beautiful interwoven geometric designs of the coil-woven baskets of the Akimel and Tohono O’odham people. On’k Akimel Oʼodham artist Dwayne Manuel, aka Dwayno Insano, has an MFA in fine art from University of Arizona and teaches art at the Tohono O’odham Community College. In 2016 the two colleagues from the Salt River Pima–Maricopa Indian Community, just east of Scottsdale, collaborated on this mural on N 16th St in Phoenix, adjacent to @TheBarrioCafe, the driving force behind Phoenix’s @Calle16PHX Arts District.  @breeze1phx/  @dwaynethedestroyer/

“DEATHPROOF DUCK"

Now living in Phoenix, Lucretia Torva is originally from Peoria, Illinois but grew up in France and Scotland and says the exposure to art and architecture provided a great foundation for her career. A realist painter working with oil and acrylic on canvas, Torva says she has also "acquired an addiction to painting murals." The versatile Torva has worked with all manner of subjects but her expertise at automotive painting, water scenes, and a series of "Shiny Things" canvases were all put to good use in this 2018 contribution to the Oak Street Alley Mural Festival, turning Phoenix's E Oak St between 14 and 15th Streets into an outdoor gallery. "Deathproof Duck" is adjacent to another Torva piece, "As You Wish," also painted in 2018.  @torvasm/  @muralsofphoenix

IRON GIANT

The family that paints graffiti together . . .  Noe Baez, aka Such Styles, started painting the walls of Phoenix in his youth, eventually catching the eyes of galleries and collectors, and now more than 35 years later he seems to have lost little enthusiasm for his art. With all the sibling and couple duos painting together, cross-generational pairings are less common but Style's son Champ has followed in his footsteps and @ValleyMetro credits their unique style to the combination of "new generation ideas meshed with old school traditions." The father/son duo created this work in early 2018 when Phoenix Mural Project launched the Phoenix Mural Festival as part of its mission to celebrate and support the artists of the city. Tempe-based graffiti artist Clyde says he began his journey into the arts in 2012, but it was his passion for architecture that pushed him into painting larger scale public walls. Clyde describes his work as "characterized by a combination of realism and skewed patterns creating perplexity in the image and wonder in the tactics." Abandoning the usual tools of the graffiti artist, Clyde used a brush for the first time on a mural in late 2017, creating this work for @FrancesVintage behind her boutique at Camelback near Central in Phoenix.  @clyde_graffitiart/
