Brenna's Night at Fire and Ice
(By Betsy Hinchey, Community Engagement Associate)
On Tuesday night we went to an amazing event at Fire and Ice in Harvard Square. The nightlong fundraiser, hosted by founder and owner John Schall, raised money to buy a retrofitted vehicle for Brenna Bean to drive.
Brenna, dedicated high school student and track star, was recently paralyzed from the waist down in a horrible car accident. In an effort to bring some comfort to his daughter during her rehabilitation, Brenna’s father contacted Fire and Ice to ask if they did take-out. John Schall received Mr. Bean’s email with a heartbreaking understanding. His brother, Mike, had also become paralyzed in a car accident in high school 34 years ago, and John understood the process of overcoming such a life-altering injury. Ever since the day John showed up in Brenna’s hospital room with her favorite food, he has had a close relationship with the family, determined to bring them hope and be there as a resource.
Fire and Ice was packed on Tuesday night. Nathan even ran into his sister's high school friend, who was there with her mom and friends. It is great to see people come out and support Brenna and a restaurant that is dedicated to contributing to charitable efforts.
There was also a silent auction upstairs featuring items from many different donors, ranging from gift cards to Red Sox tickets to luxury box seats at a Celtics game! We met briefly with Brenna, who joked with us about the bad weather that John was so happy about (because it left the new 4th floor cool). She is a smiling, beautiful girl and we wish her all the best.
I had never been to Fire and Ice before, though I had grown up hearing all about it from friends who were huge fans of the buffet, but now I understand why it’s so popular. The food is not only all-you-can-eat and make-your-own, which I love, but it also tastes great! (As do the margaritas!) The ambience is fun and the staff is super friendly. We at Swellr are so excited to have this great restaurant signed up with us, and I for one will definitely be back!
