Opening Remarks by Bre Pettis, CEO of Makerbot Bre Petter, CEO of Markerbot, kicked SXSW off by talking about the future of 3D printing in his opening remarks. It’s taken many years but the small Brooklyn startup is now at the forefront of technology with what seems is a limitless opportunity. Many are predicting 3D printing will affect the human race as much as the Internet has. Imagine being able to print the perfect shirt at home, print out food like the Jetsons, or even an organ for in need of a donor. It’s never a good feeling for a startup when and of the tech giants enter into your space, so what’s stopping them from going after folks like Maketbot or Shapeways? Market viability, asceticism around the pace of adoption or pragmatically how many people can even afford one of these machines. One thing Makerbot has done to differentiate itself from present and future competition is a library of over 25,000 things that are all ready to print. If and when the big tech giants enter in, they’ll have a hard time competing with this crowd sourced catalog of items called Thingiverse. If you are an early adopter, here’s a consumer’s guide on 24 models already out in the market. I probably would wait for the median price to drop unless you’re a hardcore tinker-er or scientist but they’re understandably tempting. Though this may not apply to you today, expect to see it surfacing many of the most innovative marketing campaigns in 2013.
Most recently Bre and the folks at Maketbot have created Replicator 2. 7 of the top 10 architecture firms use Makerbot. Nasa uses them. Ford uses them. Payment solution LevelUp made their new scanning station with their help. They were involved in helping to make a sleep apnea device to help monitor babies from your phone. Pretty Small Things sells dollhouse furniture.
In today’s announcement, Bre brought out the Makerbot Digitizer which let’s you scan anything you want and replicate it. This moves the company from just an exporting device to a collection platform as well.
For brands this this could mean dramatic decreases in costs for prototypes of new ideas or other cost efficiencies in advanced manufacturing. Brands like GE are already using it in engagements like the GE Air Show where they crowd sourced ideas of spaceships fans would like to see. GE Garages has used this to inspire wonder through invention with Makerbot. For agencies creative briefs may include 3D printing as a channel if one day more than a small percentage of the population has these at home. To be on the cutting edge, buying a small fleet of these to empower Creative Technologist or Interactive Producers might be an amazing investment to keep your employees in the know.
