Bret Primack, who made this documentary on the late Ira Gitler, has outdone himself. Anyone who has read Ira Gitler's work (and especially, in my view, his masterwork of jazz narrative, Swing to Bop) should need no convincing about his place in the pantheon of jazz journalism. Yet here, a lineup of his eminent colleagues serves up morsel after morsel of insight -- not just about Ira Gitler's place in jazz, but also about his humanity. Essential viewing, for anyone who cares about jazz at its best in the last century.

Is Jazz Radio Obsolete?

Bret Primack's Google Hangouts on jazz, which he simply calls "Hangs," are worth checking out. This Hang strikes close to home: has the proliferation of choices for the jazz listener forced jazz radio to change, and have the changes that have resulted been good for radio and for the jazz listener? Would the informative and ultra-urbane musician and radio host Billy Taylor instead be a jazz blogger today, as the panel suggests, because jazz radio no longer has any use for an expansive font of jazz information?
