Fighters going for broke to win training stipend prize at ‘The Best of the Best’ this Saturday in Harlingen
HARLINGEN, TX, January 29, 2013 – At the forefront it seems almost too good to be true, a $50,000 tournament of sorts on the regional MMA level and a chance for a fighter at this level to win a contract for that amount in order to chase their dreams but that’s exactly the premise J & C Productions is billing their upcoming event behind. Set for this Saturday, February 1st at White Wings Stadium in Harlingen, ‘The Best of the Best’ is promising three $50,000 contracts to the winner of their three headlining matches.
The lineup is pretty impressive. 2013 TXMMA Awards Rookie of the Year runner-up Ryan Spann (ATT Beaumont, 4-0) headlines opposite New Mexico native Randy McCarty (2-2) in the main event while Spann’s more experienced teammate Cody Williams (7-4) continues his own climb back up the ranks when he tests himself against South Texas vet David Fuentes (8-9). Brett Ewing and Jamall Emmers also rematch following a controversial ending in their first match, a TKO loss for Ewing which he contested was directly due to strikes to the back of the head. In short, with Cody’s comeback, Ryan’s continued ascent and Ewing’s chance at retribution there’s lots of storylines to follow behind this one but perhaps none bigger than the whole $50,000 contract billing.
‘When you tell a fighter he will be given $2,500 a month to help him train, it is to his mind, too good to be true,” said organizer/promoter Jeff Bonugli in an article on the TexasFighting.com blog. He went on to explain that the $50,000 is in fact a $2,500 per month stipend to go toward full-time training with the ongoing payouts contingent on the fighter continuing to win in the organization or else the contract could be terminated. So therein lies the rub… it’s by no means a $50K check to the winners but either way it’s worth fighting for nonetheless considering your typical payouts for fighting on smaller shows.

Texas Pride - Fight Card Preview for Beaumont, TX
By TXMMA Staff
Texas Pride Event Preview; Cody Williams seeking third straight win in Beaumont
BEAUMONT, TX, September 27, 2013 – This weekend’s professional MMA action in focus for the lone star state comes by way of Southeast Texas with Beaumont hosting JC Production’s “Texas Pride” MMA event at the Montagne Center At Lamar University. The SETX fight card is set to feature ten bouts total and is headlined by popular local Cody “Wolverine” Williams taking on undefeated Brandon Ruiz along with a whole host of regional fighters along with some others from as far as San Antonio and the Austin area.
The first pro fighter to come out of the Beaumont area, Cody Williams returns to his home city looking for his third straight win. He last competed back in May, beating D’Angelo de Souza Vieira by first round TKO at Pride of the Valley 2. He defeated David Armas at IXFA 9 prior to that and will now look to extend his streak against Brandon Ruiz, undefeated at 3-0 after a lone win in his one fight amateur career. Ruiz’s pro opponents thus far represent a combined record of 2-12 so it’s safe to say Williams will no doubt be his biggest challenge yet in this one.
Another matchup to look forward to on this card is Dayton, Ohio native Brett Ewing taking on Killeen’s Jamall Emmers. These two 24 year olds are two of the more experienced fighters on this card and are jockeying to climb their way up the mythical state rankings with a win here in Beaumont. Emmers in particular is one to watch with two straight wins heading into this fight. Meanwhile, Ewing will be looking to bounce back after getting his own two-fight win streak snapped with a 2nd round TKO loss to Antonio Castillo Jr. (7-4) in his last fight this past August at an NAAFS event up in Cleveland, Ohio.
As for the rest of the card, there are some other notables to keep an eye on.
One of them is American Top Team Beaumont’s Ryan Spann, who’ll be looking to bring his pro record to an impressive 4-0 against debut fighter Jhonoven Pati. “Superman” Spann has three submission finishes in his first three bouts so he’ll no doubt be looking for another in this one. Devin Christopherson will also look to stay undefeated against journeyman Mark Garcia after two first round wins at IMKF while San Antonio’s Billy Buch looks to break a two-fight losing streak against another journeyman in David Salazar.
Check out the full card for “Texas Pride” below. Feel free to sound off on our TXMMA Facebook Page with your thoughts on this card as well.

Pride of the Valley 2 Interview - Brett Ewing
“I’m an ‘in your face’ fighter from the moment the bell rings. I come in, dictate the pace and go to work. I never let an opponent get comfortable. I attack with everything and take the fight anywhere I choose.”
Those are the words of Brett Ewing ahead of his upcoming fight versus Raynaldo “Ray” Rodriguez June 21st at Pharr’s Pride of the Valley 2.
As a native of Dayton, Ohio transplanted to Austin, TX just within the last couple of years, Brett already has quite the background in Mixed Martial Arts, finishing up with an 8-0 amateur record before moving on to the pro ranks in 2011. His pro record (all contested in PA and OH) currently stands at 3-3 heading into his Texas debut but if it were up to him it might as well say 0-0.
He’s looking at this one with a renewed sense of mind.
“I’ve been eating, sleeping and focusing on this fight since January,” says Brett. Training with Paragon BJJ Austin and Austin Muay Thai as his Texas base, Ewing decided in March to make the move to Coconut Creek, Florida to train with the vaunted American Top Team squad led by Ricardo Liborio and Conan Silveira.
“I’ve lived 2 miles from the gym since March and have spent every waking moment preparing for this fight. I wake up, eat a healthy breakfast, drink liters of water and put my body to the grind stone at one of the best martial arts academies on the planet. I’ve been putting my skills to the test against world class fighters, and getting fine-tuned by top notch coaching in every discipline.”
As for his opponent at Pride of the Valley 2, Ewing seems to have a healthy amount of respect but he’s certainly not lacking in confidence either.
“When I think about this fight I get excited like a kid waiting for Christmas! It has been too long since I’ve stepped in the cage I can’t wait to get in there. Ray is a ‘do or die’ type of fighter with scrappy boxing and some impressive submissions. I like his style – he goes out to finish opponents and put on a performance. I respect his skill set and the passion he brings to the crowd. I would say that I’m probably going to be the bigger, stronger fighter who is able to dictate the pace and range of the fight. Ray has the ability to finish but I will have more powerful strikes and my pace won’t slow a bit from the 1st to the 3rd round. If he isn’t in the best shape of his life, it will be a short fight. I see this fight either ending violently in the 1st round or we put on the Fight of the Night performance.”
