From a post this morning by Brian Hoffmans wife Kimberly Karen Hoffman it is confirmed Brian has passed away! "I had the pleasure of seeing Brett Hoffman with Malevolent Creation live once. I think the year was 1993 I was about 15 or 16 years old it was at a small dive bar in Phoenix Arizona called The Mason Jar, if my memory is correct. stream Bret’s Tape by Indiana band Brownies in Cinema
The boys of Bloomington have been on a tear lately, getting some belated but well-deserved attention recently for a run of releases that hit last year. One more heads-up from HOOPS’ Drew Auscherman leads us to Bret’s Tape, another very welcomed (and new!) set of carefree, lo-fi guitar tracks with weekend lounging on the mind. It’s by Brett Hoffman and his band Brownies in Cinema, for whom Winspear just threw the tape’s release party the other night alongside Jade TV and HOOPS.
There are eight tracks on the cassette by my count, and each proves that Hoffman’s got a nice ear for hooks. The song that starts around the 11:30 mark is a genuine beauty, my personal favorite pairing of loose riffs and understated vocals on Bret’s Tape. It’s all-around wonderful though, and while there’s no word on where to download or pick this up right now, you can stream Auscherman’s rip of it in full right here.
