You've Got the Love I Need
you are my sunshine | brett & toby
Fatherhood had been pretty good to Toby thus far, despite the claims of very many who knew the Belfronts. Since Susie's birth, he had only accidentally locked her in a car once, accidentally forgot to babygate the doggy door only a handful of times, and then there had been that one rather eventful time back in Oxford when he had let Claire and Cal watch her for like, twenty minutes tops and he had come back to find his teething toddler chewing on the rubbery end of a giant dick. "What, Tobias? It's brand new, don't be such a prude." But despite all of these very minor bumps in the road of fatherhood, he had Brett by his side the entire way. Well, sometimes. Toby and Susie were currently on the same ~sleep schedule -- not by choice, of course. Every day it was starting to seem more and more like Susie was going to end up shifting on the full moon, and Toby was pretty fine with that shift coming later rather than sooner. Still, her restlessness during the week prior to the full moon wasn't something he took for granted. It might have only been 5 a.m. but how was Toby just supposed to ignore that face? Of course, this also meant that they were usually pretty hungry at the same time, too. Susie sat diligently at the kitchen table, a pink crayon in hand as she drew a picture of mommy while Toby concentrated on pancakes. Pancakes was a total dad thing, right? His dad used to flip the pancake over in the air, flawlessly, every single damn time. He probably should have picked that trait up. It was absolutely a goal of his to strive to be the parent his daughter favored more. Brett might have done the whole 'hot pink fairy princess' thing but Toby was going to flip a damn pancake and his daughter would like it! "Heeeey, Susie," Toby turned away from the stove to face her, pan in hand, shaking it back and forth as he prepped to toss the pancake. Susie's blue eyes looked up from piece of paper, almost as if to say 'What the fuck, Daddy?' What the fuck, indeed. "I'm gonna flip your pancake, check this out, kiddo." Be it severe overconfidence, brute-force werewolf strength, stupidity, or maybe a mix of all three -- one moment the pancake was prepped for take-off and the next....... Susie's cackle of delight was may more Belfront than it should have been. "Shit," he muttered, setting the pan back on the stove and quickly reaching over to shut it off. "Sh shh shh," he attempted to calm Susie's hysterical laughter down, his eyes flitting between her and the ceiling, where there was a very stuck pancake caked to it. "Shhh, Susie, don't wake mommy!" He was just about to grab a chair from the table to stand on so he could get it down when an adorably gravely voice came from around the corner, followed by the soft steps of Brett's adorably bare feet across the wood floor. "Too late." Brett was so sweet in the mornings. Well, okay, she was so sweet all of the time but especially in the mornings where her still-pink hair was a mess and one of her cheeks still had the faint outlines of her face scrunched into their pillows and her stupid silky pajama shorts with the weiner dogs printed on them were much cuter on their bedroom floor but Susie picked them out and this was his family and he loved them both so much and they were the most precious things in the world to him... and he had gotten a pancake stuck to their ceiling. Brett was still trying to get over (but still lowkey bitter) about Jackson and Toby accidentally sitting on their pizza and staining the couch. "Hey," he greeted with a smile, almost breathless as he walked over to give her a kiss. "Morning. I made pancakes and bacon, but Susie and I already ate all the bacon, so I tried to make you a heart shaped pancake instead but it came out kind of looking like a gimpy butterfly..." Also, he didn't just toss a pancake on the ceiling.

Brett’s parting words that day had kept him up at night and woke him up every morning — it was a good thing that he worked and that coffee was a thing that existed, because by the time Saturday rolled around, he was a walking zombie. Sure, he had gone out the night before with Colton and Caden and had gotten plastered, but it was something other than Brett’s parting words that dragged him out of bed today.
She had a doctor’s appointment.
Also Claire had called him to remind him but he also suspected that had something to do with the fact that she also wanted bail. “You look like shit,” she told him before hopping out of his truck, “but at least you took a shower.” And then she flipped him off and walked away.
Toby had gotten to their doctor’s office early — maybe a little too early — and had taken a seat in the small waiting area where a couple sat watching their toddler smack blocks together on the ground and another guy around his age sat reading a magazine. Toby didn’t have any magazines and his phone had been on the verge of death this whole entire week for lack of caring to even charge it. Just as his head fell back against the wall and his eyes drifted shut, a pair of shoes and a perky voice broke over the sound of the yapping toddler and the secretary on the phone. “Mr. Belfront! Nice to see you again. Where’s Brett?” she asked, looking to him with a warm smile as she looked up from her clipboard.
He paused; swallowed, then managed a smile. “Coming. We drove separately.” And they also weren’t even spending the night together anymore. And they had stopped talking to each other. Also, he was a fucking asshole. “I’m a little early.”
Holding Out for a Hero || Brett & Toby (closed)
Somehow or other, Brett had gotten rid of all of the baked goods that she'd made a few nights ago after... Well, she wasn't going to think about it. Somehow or other, she and Toby had ended up falling right back into their comfort zones with each other. And they'd been perfectly fine since then. But his suggestion of her and her parents going to see his mom had been on her mind ever since then.
But, with the holidays that'd just passed and one thing or another, her parents hadn't - to their dismay - been able to accompany Brett to see Toby's mother. They'd given her a small bag of things to take to her, though. Some coffee grounds of her favorite type from the cafe, and some other various things from their businesses that they knew would brighten the Belfront mother's day.
And so, as Brett left her home with the bag - and of course a basketof fresh blueberry muffins that Brett had only just finished making - Brett headed to the Belfront home she knew so well. She'd texted Toby that she was on her way, seeing as they'd agreed to meet there; but the sun had just set. And she was smart enough to know that she needed to be careful. She'd taken her car, and parked on the street in front of the home.
As she got out of the car, she grabbed her things and was ready to head inside when something - or someone - gripped her elbow. She hadn't seen anyone when she'd pulled up and so when she turned to see that a pale, sickly looking man was staring at her like she was a buffet dinner, her heart sunk. This was just what her parents had warned her about when the Vampire Revelation happened.
The man stared at her before taking in a deep breath, "You smell goooood." And as she gazed at him, fangs descended in his mouth. Fear gripped her and she dropped everything she had in her hands.
She didn't know what made her do it; but it was almost instinctual. She took in a deep breath and at the very top of her lungs screamed.
"TOBY!"
The vampire looked at her in confusion, and hesitated. Brett struggled to pull her arm back from him, but his grip was iron tight. The vampire began to laugh at her, but then the front door of the Belfront home opened and Toby appeared. Brett only caught a glimpse of him before the vampire yanked her to his body, wrapping his arms around her. They were cold and hard. She heard the man that held her let out a hissing noise, and then... Well, she didn't really know what was going on. Everything was a blur. The vampire was running; but being so young, wasn't altogether much faster than they'd been as a human.
Brett was afraid - for the first time in her life - about her own well being. Was she going to die? Remembering the way the vampire that was now hauling her away had looked at her... She certainly worried that she was experiencing her last few minutes alive.
