“This is the most recent CD I acquired, a BOGOF offer when I purchased the Rough Guide To World Music for Children from World Music Network a couple of months ago. I can highly recommend the latter if you want something different but undeniably groovy to bop around the living room with a 4-month old daughter. . This collection is less funky, but equally diverse; an eclectic mix of music from across the breadth of Europe, with a particular focus on the Eastern end and a cheeky addition from the Turkish-Kurdish London-based Olcay Bayir as the bonus 13th track. Poland, Hungary, Serbia, Ireland, Greece, Moldova, Sweden and the ancient region of Pannonia, once part of Hungary, Romania, Serbia and Croatia, make an appearance on this musical travelogue. It even includes music from England, proving without doubt, that the country is indeed part of Europe, whether it likes it or not. . Polish jazz is already a favourite of mine and trio Chlopcy Kontra Basia are a perfect opener to the album with a bouncy double bass-led number, Wieczerza... . Polonäs Frän Sexdrega is four and a half minutes of pure loveliness. According to the sleeve notes this is a Swedish processional, and it has that quiet reverential, almost dirge-like feel to it. Some of the note progressions give it an almost medieval sound. I shall definitely seek out more from this band, FatDog. Their 2013 album, which this track is from, is called New Found Land referencing “a mythical island in the North Sea, where musicians from Scandinavia and Britain meet to play and swap stories.” (World Music Network) .
