World Series of Fighting 3 Results: Fitch Submitted in 41 Seconds
Going into the World Series of Fighting 3 main event, UFC veteran Jon Fitch was as high as a -500 favorite. His opponent, another UFC veteran “The Peoples Warrior” Josh Burkman was as high as a +375 underdog. Most onlookers felt that despite improvements after their first fight and outside the UFC, that Jon Fitch was still simply on another level. Amazing what a nice left hook can do in leveling the playing field. After dropping Jon Fitch with a left, Burkman defended a weak shot from Fitch with a guillotine, pulling his opponent into half guard. A couple of seconds later Burkman felt Fitch go out and simply got up, raised his hand in victory and that was that.
In 41 seconds Josh Burkman became the first person to submit Jon Fitch in over a decade. The other submission loss on Fitch’s record belongs to Mike Pyle in his debut back in 2002. This is by far Burkmans best win and won that should propel him into the top 10 of the division. His ability to stay there via fighting good competition is yet to be seen. What would of made this moment better was if it were for a belt. As I wondered in my preview after this fight where does WSOF go from here? Steve Carl and Tyson Steel fought in the co-main event, maybe Steve Carl faces Burkman now for the title? Does anyone really want to see Josh Burkman fight Steve Carl for a title?
It was quick work in the night's co-main event. Tyson Steel came out throwing a variety of kicks that appeared to annoy Carl more than actually damage him. Carl bided his time before launching forward with his boxing. Steel shot in after catching a kick but lost positional advantage. Carl quickly grabbed a rear naked choke and rolled his opponent into position, forcing the tap at 1:32 of round 1.
Jacob Volkmann vs Lyle Beerbohm made up the second of a pair of solid fights in the lightweight division. Going in I expected Beerbohm to force scrambles but ultimately be unable to out wrestle volkmann. This was partly true, Beerbohm was unable to force scrambles. Only able to push Volkmann up against the cage before being reversed and muscled around by “Dr. Feelgood”. Volkmann was able to take the back several times and threaten with rear naked chokes but was never able to seal the deal. It wasn’t pretty but after 15 minutes Jacob Volkmann was awarded the victory 30-27 x 2, 29-28 on the judges scorecards.
The other lightweight fight on the main card featured prospect Justin Gaethje facing off against veteran Brian Cobb. Gaethje came out when he showed raw aggression in his fight with JZ Cavalcante and he showed that same raw aggression last night. Gaethje has less than 10 professional fights and is listed on Sherdog as having 7 amature fights. He is extremely raw and that nearly cost him this fight. Brian Cobb was using a simple double jab to shut him down . Gaethje threw massive looping power punches that could be seen a mile away. Supplemented by throwing heavy kicks that ended up getting him taken down more often then doing damage in the first two rounds. Once takedown Gaethje had a few moments where he was able to simply muscle his way out of the weak position. Most of the time he ended up with his back taken and turtled up. He is young kid, but fought in a manner that nearly cost him this fight. If it weren’t for his heavy leg kicks in the final round he would have lost the decision. Gaethje landed several hard, thudding leg kicks (the sign of a good leg kick) on Cobb's left leg that took it right out from under him. Cobb called for the fight to be stopped at 2:19 of round 3.
Stopping Brian Cobb by strikes sends a strong message to the WSOF lightweight division. I would not set him up to fight Jacob Volkmann next. Volkmann would have no qualms taking Gaethje down after a high kick or random flying knee. Volkmann is getting better at taking the back and riding out these dominant positions enroute to a victory. Dan Lauzon defeated John Gunderson on the undercard, he would be a better fight for Gaethje if WSOF is interested in building this prospect up.
Overall this was a really solid night of fights. The production values were smoother and we didn’t get any reports of them scrambling to meet athletic commission regulations. The commercial breakdown was weak but isn’t all that worse than watching a live event on FuelTV. Bas Rutten and Todd Harris are not good at their job but they are easily blocked out.
The World Series of Fighting plans to return August 10 at the Citizen Bank Arena in Ontario, California. WSOF President Ray Sefo plans to return to MMA at the card. Sefo is 2-1 in MMA and is coming off a loss to Valentijn Overeem at Strikeforce - Fedor vs. Silva as part of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix reserve tournament. JZ Cavalcante and Tyson Griffin will also be facing off at WSOF 4.
