brick was perfect yesterday so to even things out she decided to settle for a grand total of 35 minutes since i came home from work 4 hours ago im going to fire her out of a canon and my next shift is in 2 hours and if im lucky i have like 45 minutes of peace before i have to take the demon out on a walk.
AND she started choking on a piece of kibble during training today and i had to hold her upside down and slap her back on very busy bus station
CAN YOU FALL OUT ALREADY. THE OTHER 3 ARE GONE. SHE REPOPENS THE SAME CUT AT LEAST ONCE DAY FOR THE PAST MONTH
yknow i knew that most dog training being focused on herders and retrievers was a major issue but it truly didnt hit me until i got a terrier mix who thinks dirt is much more interesting than i am. "work with high value treats outside" she will do anything for chicken in the house but doesnt give a shit about it if theres a bird in her vicinity
i need to make an intro post to pin and share around dogblr and post some older photos, she changed sooo much in the short time ive had her. ears compilation incoming soon
was doing some training outside with brick and a neighbour was passing by and kept pestering me saying shit like shes vicious since shes a terrier and unsolicoted advice on how her daughter trained hers bla bla and brick understandably got frustrated that im not throwing the toy for her despite her offering engagement, sitting and touching repeatedly and started fucking biting me and then the neighbout went Well. you need to be harder on her and more dominant. thanks 👍 😑😑😑😑😑😑😑🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃
Brick is officially 5 months old as of yesterday! Here's the rundown of month 4 so far:
House manners: Still a major thief and will attempt to climb on the table during meals. Need to work more and work harder on teaching her how to settle better. She's currently 2-3 hours sleep, 1-2 hours awake and conks out after a few minutes of being put in a room alone when overtired. Self settles beautifully after walks though.
Potty training: Had several days with accidents due to a UTI, but I'd say she's now probably house trained! I wish she's able to piss more often as she'll sometimes refuse to pee despite being outside the building for over 20 minutes. I'm okay with her holding it for 3-4 hours, she can hold it for almost 7 and the vet suspects thats why she got the UTI in the first place, which I want to avoid
Teething and mouthing: She's still losing teeth so she is mouthier than she was, I can't tell if she's gentler or if the adult teeth just hurt less because they're not needles. She does the best if she's got a chew to carry around but that's not always possible as the rice ones are boring to her now and she's got a pretty sensitive stomach. My parents got her a big stock of pig ears but 1 small piece gave her diarrhea.. Any method other than walking out of the room or putting her in a timeout several times doesn't work. It's been a genuine struggle and I can't wait for this to be over.
Resource guarding: Major regression aaaaand now she's a resource guarder.🙃I made sure to trade with items or offering treats for drop it but she growled over a sock the other day and after having to pull a chocolate bar out of her mouth on a walk, she's now willing going to snap and growl over a shoe.
Obedience: Still have a lot of ways to go with this. She's great inside the house, but her focus and engagement still needs work. She seemingly forgot what lie down means. Currently knows: sit, down, touch, let's go, come, place, wait, break/okay and cross. Her leave it is fine inside the house but abysmal on walks and I need to drill it more. I need to work harder on the relaxation protocol and mat work.
Walks: Not a lot of engagement on walks, the outside is still too stimulating, BUT she started offering engagement herself and is doing well with random directional changes. Can do a wonderful loose leash but I also allow her to sniff a whole lot. Finds it really hard to ignore birds. Teaching the cross command has helped with preventing getting legs bitten while crossing the street. She is an absolute scavenger and I'm definitely getting her a muzzle as trash is going to just keep getting worse with the tourist season.
People: Depending on the person she's fine, still apprehensive of most strangers but willing to give them a sniff. LOVES the neighbors and people she has met several times.
Dogs: Started getting dog reactive around the 4 month mark when she started teething as her arousal threshold became nonexistent from the pain. I have been working on it for 2 weeks now and depending on which dogs she sees and if triggers haven't stacked high yet, she's able to politely look and redirect. There's a lot of off leash dogs so it's been difficult.
Separation: Because of my work schedule she's currently not alone for longer than 2-3 hours at a time.
Handling: regressed. Doesn't like being carried anymore, after she growled at me once I started to approach it differently and make sure I always have something for her to gnaw on. She wasn't shy for paws but now will duck away when i reach for them. Touching ears and mouth is still acceptable.
Grooming: the 3rd bath is pending until i get help, doesn't like water or being wet but she takes it while whining, at a certain point shes too sad about being wet to accept treats, HATES the dryer and will cover in the corner at the sight of it, so for now towel dried in a lap while being fed chicken works well, i have plenty of time to work on this before autumn starts. she's fine with being combed and brushed if she's being fed treats which is fine. her coat is easy to take care of. major regression with nails. considering making a scratch pad.
Food: Currently on Happy Dog Naturcroq with some random wet food mixed in to make it more palatable as she lost appetite due to teething, she still doesn't finish the bowl though, the vet said everything seems fine and that I shouldn't worry. Her poop has actually started turning solid after the introduction of wet food, and while I'm really worried about creating a picky eater I don't want to start emptying her anal glands due to chronic soft stool as a puppy either. I suspect the puppy food might be too rich. She'll be switched to Brit Premium when the Naturcroq bag is over.
Still a lot of work to do and I'm dreading the teenage stage ✌️
Brick got a big 2 hour walk today so she leaves me the fuck alone on my day off and she did pretty good for most of it. Managed to leave a half eaten burrito and a fucking. raw squid she dug out of a bush, which is a major improvement to yesterday where I had to take a chocolate bar out of her mouth. also had a woman approach me while we were outside of a dog park and practicing being calm around other dogs, she asked me what breed she is, and then she proceeded to ask why she's not in puppy school (none in my town, its a 2 hr for 1 hour class), then told me i seem like too gentle of a soul and that i need to be more dominant 🤨
