If anyone has followed my blog for a while now, they might have heard of the Philadelphia based band, Arches. Their debut concept album ‘Wide Awake’ was amazing. Featured on my top 10 albums for 2011, and even ranked best album of 2011 by the guys at Bandcamp Hunter! And now Arches member, Tom Herman, has released a new album with his side project Old Smile. Their debut album Hearing Static, has some jazz influences from start to finish. More noticeably on songs like ‘Quiet Nights’, ‘Passing By’ and ‘Hearing Static’.

'Brief Conversation' is probably my favorite track of the album. It starts off with a soft drum pattern and then a funky bass line which will have you grooving for the rest of song. Guitars kick in and add that mysterious ambience along with Tom Herman's vocals. While listening to the album, you'll feel like it's almost dreamlike. Like if what you are listening to just couldn’t be real. And if it is, there is no words to express what you had just felt.
