“All she wanted was for things to be nice and pretty, the way they were in the songs.”
having 347485 feelings about briennesansa being a deconstruction of a stereotypical fantasy romance in the same sense that got is a deconstruction of a tolkienesque fantasy world.
they're, in some senses, both characters from the wrong genre. in a more lighthearted story, they'd be in their element, brienne as the picture-perfect knight and sansa as a kindhearted princess. except they're not, they're in a crapsack world that wants to beat their idealism out of them. the world sucks, and they've both developed their own ways of coping with that, but they haven't /given up/. both of them still look for that light and hope in the world, and they're some of the few characters that do, despite the ridicule and how hard it is to keep believeing in humanity when it continues to not believe in them. they stay true to themselves and what they believe in.
and together, are they anything like the songs? fuck no. sansa didn't get rescued until it was far too late and brienne is only a single person who can't protect her all the time and at best, their "happy ending" is brienne as an affair in sansa's loveless political marrage (and realistically, not even that, because that's dishonorable as shit). but it's almost, sort of /something/ like this impossible ideal they both have, and having each other helps take the sting out of the world not being the place it should be.
im so happy we have at least another few episode of brienne looming threateningly at anyone who wants to hurt sansa
cute briennesansa concepts: sansa picks up that brienne is uncomfortable in typical dresses so she takes it upon herself to sew her something a little more androgynous but still definitely feminine and pretty, like what brienne wears in he garden with margaery.
when she gives it to her, brienne is so surprised that sansa took the time to do this for her that she’s kind of speechless for a moment, sansa starts to apologize and tell her she doesn’t have to wear it, it’s okay if she doesn’t like it, and brienne immediately stammers out that she loves it and she doesn’t know how to thank her properly and sansa just beams and brienne temporarily can’t focus because sansa is so pretty when she smiles and tbh brienne would die to keep her smiling like that
other cute concept: as much as brienne would kick the ass of anybody who threatened sansa, sansa is equally protective of brienne in terms of court gossip and people talking shit about her. not that sansa is ever directly confrontational, but she’s sweet and witty and simultaneously lets anyone who says anything cruel about brienne know that their comments will not be tolerated.
the briennesansa fic we all deserve: 200k of lowkey pining because sansa is confused about the girls thing/has been trained her entire life to be a passive participant in a relationship and brienne is very, very confused about the girls thing/is pretty sure that wanting non-seven-approved things from your liege lady is not an appropriately honorable emotion
brienne feels it isn’t her place to ask anything of sansa, especially after the poor girl’s been through so much, and thus on the off chance sansa wants the same, sansa will say something. sansa doesn’t want to lose the one person she can rely on just because of her weird desires, isn’t sure how to communicate ‘no, I’m not thinking of you as a man at all and I don’t want you to be one, I like you because you’re brave and gentle’, and the part of her that is still eleven years old and believes in songs wants brienne to make the first move. brienne probably couldn’t (deliberately) be song-worthy charming if she tried and is more likely to do the romantic-gesture-equivalent of tripping over her boot laces.
this status quo lasts roughly forever.
