The playlist was devised by me to function as a fake-OST because I have psychological issues and there's nothing wrong with that. I don't always listen to it, but much like the Pinterest, I'm always adding to it whenever I'm writing. (Admittedly, Chapter 24 of LAL was brought to you by the Genshin Impact soundtrack...)
Some trivia about the tracks in this list...
It's mostly in chronological order. The soundtrack changes as settings and circumstances do.
I consider "Tundra Swans" to be Nadeshiko's theme.
Rima doesn't have a theme because the world already revolves around her
Going Hozen and First Bath of a Stray Dog are "sneaking" music. (?) (Chapter 5)
You'll note the final track is from a British Light Music album. No comment.
Several tracks are diegetic, namely:
Monkey's Story is in-universe shamisen.
Madagascar is a music box track (Chapter 10)
Introduction (1936) contains subtle city ambience but is mostly non-diegetic.
Aikoku Koshinkyoku is almost pure ambience. If you like more experimental album "experiences," I HIGHLY recommend Showboat to China the album and anything else from the Winter&Winter label
Kiso-Bushi and Tokyo Boogie Woogie were both by contemporary artists of the time.
On The Hills of Manchuria is on there because I love Russian waltzes, but was composed in reference to the Battle of Mukden during the Russo-Japanese war. Mukden (now Shenyang) would find itself in the crosshairs once more 25 years later during the 1931 "Mukden Incident" which was employed as a pretext to launch a Japanese invasion of Manchuria. I imagined that to old Japanese officers and veterans choosing the music for a cotillion in 1937, this song would have several layers of significance.
