Here’s a little family portrait I whipped up a few days ago because I had some questions about Makaria 😂 so I formally present —

Zagreus, Melinöe and the twins, Brimos and Makaria

Ages are 17, 16 and 5 (the twins were a happy accident hence the gap)

Second drawing is for color reference exclusively, it was my first pass! Everyone else’s designs are preeeetty much the same except for some minor changes tweaks with color.

Aaaand bonus smooches from a week or so ago while I tried to get back into the Hercules style (also because I wanted to draw some good ol’ fashioned lovin)

I’m not doubting your google search, but Brimo as a name is only applied as an epithet to Demeter in her madness/anger (and her birthing Ploutos) and possible Hecate in her underworld role. If I had to make a logical guess, “Brimos” likely relates to the stories of Demeter/Persephone having Zagreus/Dionysus and his connections in ritual madness and life/death/rebirth. Again I’m not doubting you, I just really doubt Smythe, who is notioriously bad at any sort of actual research, would suddenly be the one to have this amazing breakthrough of an unknown HxP child and only just now mentioned it.

Yeah that could also be the case! I get your reasoning and it makes sense to me as well. Maybe Dionysos and Zagreus and Brimos are the same deity but with different names depending on the region and time? I didn't find Brimos and Dionysos/Zagreus at the same passage yet so they might be the same.

But... are we 100% sure this Brimos was exactly the same deity as the Dionysos we know? Maybe it was a Chronic deity that later mixed with the characteristics of Dionysos? I am not saying that they are different I'm just saying that's what I understand from the texts I saw thus far.

Brimos is an adjective (or "epitheto" in the Hellenic language) essentially. So it can be applied to a Goddess (Brimo for Demeter) and a God (Brimos for Dionysos). But epithets/adjectives can also be names in our language. (Well, technically most names are descriptors).
