Sunday Selfies

  Hi everyone! We are joining The Cat on My Head’s Sunday Selfies. Being that I missed Kiss a Ginger Day, I made sure to include all 3 of our gingers. I have yet to touch Tuffy let alone kiss him, but he is more relaxed around us. Emmy on her dad’s lap. Trouble being no trouble at all. Friday on top of the kitty bunk bed. Anthropologists go Native

This article lightly examines the work of Elizabeth Briody as an anthropologists turned corporate consultant.  Her work with GM emphasizes the need for understanding the social structures within companies on the people level, rather than simply the process level.  Understanding the social constructs upon which corporations are built offers insights that allow for true opportunity in improving companies performance.  Without paying attention to these vital structures there is little rhyme or reason in understanding how the processes that companies rely on are completed, and how those might be able to be improved through altering social structures or improving them.

One significant note was the identification of natural leaders within the social structures.  Turning to these individuals as champions of change when management seeks to modify processes must reap huge benefits.  Within companies these are the un-sung heroes that can make or break the atmosphere and influence the happiness of teams.  Moreover change is not often a comfortable process for people, lending them the hand of the natural leaders allows the transition to operate more smoothly and effectively while building morale and emboldening the established leaders in the groups through recognition.

I think this approach towards presents unlimited opportunity in tapping the potential of the individual to create atmosphere that is teaming with inspiration and encouragement.  Understanding the individuals need for growth and inspiration will lend itself to companies whose outlook becomes drastically improved through the collective conscious of workplaces filled with inspired individuals.

An Ethnography Primer

Before beginning the article, I must admit to quickly pulling up ethnography in the dictionary to clarify exactly what group of individuals the article was relating with.  The article effectively takes the previous articles argument one step further through connecting the dots of ethnographic approach and design.  How these two groups work collaboratively to define and design effective solutions based upon the holistic approach of the ethnographer.

Clear and open communication remains the most prevalent necessity to facilitate the ethnographer/designer approach in order to develop the most refined and effective outcome.  The six-step approach lists the simple foundation with which this method may be effectively engaged:

Define the problem

Find the people

Plan an approach

Collect data

Analyze data and interpret opportunities

Share insights

Effective communication throughout this process will lend a hand towards smoother transitions as the process moves along, breakdowns in communication early in the process will surely lead to complicating circumstances.

Virtual Anthropology

The insight of pursuing the consumer through their own shared online life presents an interesting topic.  Granted trends are shifting dangerously towards users openly sharing with greater amounts of personal information virtually, there sits a disconnect that perhaps can not be accomplished.  When we post information to the internet knowing it is to be shared publicly there is often this self-defense mechanism that filters the information before it is posted.  We witness virtual projections of individuals perceptions on how they would like to be perceived for a given context.  This hardly presents true insight or could even be considered a 'snap-shot'.

Because I post a famous inspiring quote on facebook this afternoon that speaks to me individually, does not mean I will interpret it the same tomorrow when I update the status again.  The rapid progression and development of information available publicly is difficult to decipher as to those ideas that present opportunity for business rather then fleeting thoughts (majority of postings).
