Beowulf
1. How can the role of religion have such an impact on the characters and the way it is used to characterize them in the novel?
In the novel Beowulf, the use of religion has a major impact on the story. In the novel we know that the role of Christianity is important to the characters in the novel and we can tell that Christianity influenced the way the book was written. In the novel the use of “Almighty God” and the reference of “Cain” and how God is seen as the “Savior” of mankind. In a way Beowulf takes advantage of them by using faith. The Danes truly believe that Beowulf can help them escape and protect them from evil, when in reality Beowulf himself can’t. In the novel there is a lot of examples that go hand in hand with the Bible. Jesus was said to be brought to this world in order to save and cleanse it from sins that has been created ever since Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit and when Cain killed his brother Abel over jealousy. The use of religion in this Old English story in a way brings the story together. It brings it together because we know that unlike today, religion was very important to them. Religion shaped the way a person thought and acted and that they found it necessary to thank God and trust in him the way the Danes did with Beowulf. Beowulf was made out to look like he was chosen by the Gods above to save the people.
2. How was killing Grendel such a big task that only Beowulf could do? What made the Beowulf decide to help kill Grendel knowing that many has died trying to slay him?
In the novel Beowulf is described as the heroic of the story. He is considered to be hero with super strength. Beowulf decides to help Hrothgar to kill Grendel who seems to be scarring the people in other words the Danes. Those who went before Beowulf to kill Grendel always seemed to fail and die in the process. The people for a while lost hope. There was even a time where Beowulf’s people decided to set a trap and Grendel ended up killing some of the soldiers but in the process, Beowulf was able to injure Grendel. During the battle Beowulf was able to kill Grendel and the mother but in the process Beowulf himself ended up getting injured and later on dying from it. Since the moment Grendel died the torment he had caused the people stopped and they recognized Beowulf as their savior.
