my d20 toxic trait is that I’m a theater studies major with a direction concentration, so whenever I watch Broadway Brawl (which is four times atp) I immediately slot myself into the role of Perry LaFev and have a mini heart attack. what do you mean it’s opening night, there are new actors and set pieces onstage that I’ve never seen before, several audience members have jumped onto the stage mid-song including a naked man and a guy who wore a hi-vis vest to the show for some reason (who tbf has an incredible voice and will be considered for any future baritone roles), important and expensive light equipment is falling and endangering the entire theater, and my lead* looks severely injured but clearly wants us to think this is what’s supposed to be happening because we have a full house, the NYT critic and Stephen Fucking Sondheim in the audience? massive props/condolences to that man for staying in his seat and watching as his beautiful show becomes the biggest Broadway train wreck since Turn Off The Dark. and then, after the show somehow finishes and the audience loves it and Sondheim compliments me and I’m on top of the world, that same lead DIES IN HER DRESSING ROOM
*it should be known that I as a director do not and will never consider leads to be worth more than any other actors, or for that matter technicians or any other theater workers. if you work in theater in any capacity please know that I love you and I hope your job goes smoothly. that said Perry probably does not share this line of thinking. I just know he’s a pro at making tech and designers consider career changes. post canceled actually maybe I don’t feel bad for him
