Pearl stepped off the warp pad, looking around at the waste of jungle. This was the fifth area she’d checked today, and she was tired, she wanted to go home and rest and see Steven and Amethyst and...but she couldn’t. She had to keep trying.
Besides. Garnet was at home.
The gem shivered involuntarily, wrapping her arms around her as she walked. She couldn’t stand being back there, paralyzed by Garnet’s silence, by her fury...Garnet had said that Pearl was wasting their time when they needed to find Peridot, right? So. No more wasted time. She wouldn’t stop looking until she found her, and then - and then...
She didn’t know what would happen then. She was so scared that it wouldn’t be enough - but it was all she knew how to do. She would prove that she wasn’t useless, or a waste of time, prove it to Garnet, prove it to herself...And things would be okay. She needed things to be okay. The thought that she had gone too far this time, pushed away one of the only friends she had left, was too much to bear.
There was a sound. Pearl startled, and then ducked down, creeping forward until she could peer into the clearing beyond. There was some old gem tech here, long overgrown, and standing among the ruins was -
“Peridot!” Pearl gasped before she could stop herself, and - there was nothing for it now - jumped up into sight. “I found you!” She sounded more surprised than anything; for all her manic determination, this had felt like a fool’s errand from the start. “I - I mean...” She glared, preparing to summon her spear. “I’m not letting you get away this time!”
