Childish Gambino – Sober

I’m checking off another one of my favorite artists this week when I head to the Broccoli Festival here in the DMV this weekend with Childish Gambino as a co-headliner.  Ever the artist who continues to challenge and change his sound this track from 2014 is one of my favorites from Mr. Glover.  Musically it has this R&B piano and guitar sound that sounds incredible with Gambino’s soulful voice, and then takes a dark turn with a heavy bass drop towards the end before returning back to the original score.  Lyrically, to me the song is about heartbreak and how Gambino has fallen so deep in love with someone that when the relationship ends, he is so drunk in love with this person that he’s become hooked and now an addict for her love that he will never recover from the relationship.  The music video is interesting in that it is open to a lot of interpretation of the viewer and could have several meanings.  Gambino does a music video cliché with him attempting to gain the attraction of a girl as she waits for her food.  It seems he does win her over but does not seal the deal in the end.  But I have had talks with friends about this video and some think that Gambino is actually an illusion made up by the girl whom is really the intoxicated person instead.  In either case, it’s a delightful song to listen to when you need to chill and vibe out for a while especially as the weather turns warmer and perfect for sitting outside.
