looking up anything about Andrea on the breaking bad subreddit is just torture. her importance is diminished and everyone thinks Jesse only loved Jane, when Jane was literally there and Jesse didn't really have to fight for the relationship. yes, there's the dad but when the dad is gone, they can just do whatever. and they do. with Andrea, he had to constantly choose to show up for her and Brock, to be better and do better. that takes a lot of strength, maturity and healing. he reflected on their relationship, he saw a future together and thought about doing what's best for them in a proactive manner. not just, "FYI I'm going to smoke. leave if you want." his relationship with Andrea is more mature and similar to an adult one. there's actual commitment. Andrea and Brock are the ones he wants to have a family with in a good neighbourhood. something tangible and doable. with Jane, it is just infatuation. running away is a shaky teenage like dream that depends on the act of running away. if you can't do that, the whole future and relationship is a big question mark. what do you do if you can't run away? if you say you'll be happy and all when you are in another country. can you then be happy here? for Andrea and Brock, the good neighbourhood is a goal, not the foundation of the whole relationship.

one thing i’ve noticed in the entirety of the breaking bad/ better call saul universe is that the narrative is extremely unforgiving, to everyone that is apart of it. there is not a single character that gets off scot free.

of course there’s the obvious characters like jesse pinkman, nacho varga, saul goodman and walter white, but everyone and their mothers have talked about how the main cast has been doomed by the narrative. i want to talk about three characters specifically that we see for maybe a handful of episodes overall, yet nobody talks about how the narrative failed them.

starting off in order that we see them in the show, i want to talk about combo. overall, i think he was in maybe like 4 episodes? but he meant so much to the show, even in the later seasons. combo died due to walters push for more territory, walters greed killed combo, which is a theme that’s going to keep coming up. there isn’t much i can say about combo, due to how he wasn’t in the show much, but his death alone is the reason why walter and gus have that fall out in season 4.

another character who was doomed by the narrative is donald margolis, jane’s father. now, jane too was doomed by the narrative, but her father is the one who suffered the most from jane’s death, leading to the plane crash and his own (attempted?? i don’t think they confirmed if he lived or died) suicide. again, because of walters own greed and need to eliminate those who he deems a threat, jane died, causing donald to end up killing two entire planes full worth of people, and quite possibly himself.

finally, i want to talk about brock. brocks uncle, tomas was in the cartel at 12, being shot and killed around the same age too. from what we see it was just him and andrea for years, until jesse came into the picture. and due to jesse coming into the picture, andrea was shot dead, because jesse tried to escape from his captors. i don’t think we know where brock is, i assume living with his grandmother now. but brock is probably the most doomed by the story in the entire show, in my opinion

getting visited by three spirits would not fix walter white. it would not make him be nicer to his humble worker jesse pinkman. walter white would wake up the next morning, throw open the window, yell down to a passing brock “u there boy, what day is this” to which brock would reply “why sir it’s christmas day!!”, and walt would say “so i haven’t missed it :) young boy here take this lily of the valley and eat it as fast as u can”

im thjibking about andrea having to run some errands so jesse babysits brock and they end up watching a movie on the couch. and out of nowhere brock approaches jesse and like hugs him slash leans on him and jesse's heart goes 🥹🥹🥹 cause omg this kid trusts him.... and loves him.......... hes a good person & father figure 🥹🥹🥹

Breaking Bad had its problems but it is the only piece of media I’ve ever come across that acknowledges the inherently predatory nature of toxic masculinity in relation to boyhood… how it demands the sacrifice of future generations to the alter of ego, how it’s complete eschewal of the more “feminine” virtues, such as kindness and mercy, invariably results in the perversion of innocence, in the martyrdom of young boys. Brock, Tomás, Drew Sharp, the little red haired boy in Peekaboo… but especially Tomás, not only murdered over what was essentially a glorified pissing contest, but forced to murder in kind prior to being disposed of. And especially Jesse. Because there were so few women players in the drug trade, and because traditional masculinity, despite its pretenses of bravery, requires an exhibitionist show of force over those not in a position to retaliate, he is made to be The Bitch of the drug trade, a surrogate woman to be fought over, doted on, degraded, protected, and eventually discarded, specifically because he is younger and smaller than his colleagues. It’s an insidious and considerably less fantastical inversion of the myth of predatory effeminate queerness, where instead it is traditional, toxic masculinity that pollutes the innocence of boyhood to achieve a psychological high, and it’s the reason why Jesse is so steadfastly dedicated to shielding boy children specifically from the aftershocks of drug trade politics. But his attempts to mitigate the damage done to other boys in the name of traditional masculinity are beyond futile, at least as long as he himself is still subscribed to that mindset.
