Nusa Penida
magical Bali
October 20, 2018 | Broken Beach, Bali
Spent my birthday looking at this beautiful view. I am reminded by God’s grace in my life. 24 years in this crazy, beautiful world.
Life has been full of ups and downs recently. Life at work has been a blur (it always has been, especially when you’re working in an advertising agency) and my anxiety attacks have worsen. On my dark days, I would question my existence and why certain things had to happen. The gray clouds would often appear and it would badly affect my mood and overall performance at work. There were days that were really difficult and I would end up crying.
As I stood by the cliff, I watched in awe as the waves crashed. I was amazed with how beautiful God’s creations were. The water was vibrant blue, so blue that I just stared at it for a full minute, trying to grasp the beauty of the ocean. The sky was clear. The rock formations were incredible. I was captivated by Bali’s beauty and the fact that my Father in heaven was the one who created all of it.
I haven’t really felt peace in a long time. It has always been chaotic in the city. But then as I stood by the cliff with all the other tourists, I realized how lucky I was to witness so much beauty. Finally, I was happy again.
Nusa Penida has so many amazing views making it hard to pick a favorite. But all the amazing cliifs aside, what made this place remarkable is the “bumpy” ride. The roads in some parts are fantastic, but to get to many of the waterfalls and beaches, the roads were pretty crazy. At times, we were just driving over narrow rocky roads and a cliff is on one side. Also, if you have motion sickness, this could be some terrain too heavy to handle. Surely not for the faint heart! Haha.
Angel’s Billabong is one of the magical spots you can’t help but marvel at. A crystal clear tide pool cascades into the ocean on the east coast of Nusa Penida. The Billabong is a remarkable formation. The crystal clear water allows you to see the patterns and textures beneath the surface. In some areas, the water is deep enough for a little dip! It is a highly photographed spot on Nusa Penida because of how unique the landscape is.
But when the cliffs form in the shape of a Tyrannosaurus Rex at Kelingking Secret Point Beach, it is bound to be a crowd favorite. Kelingking actually translates into English meaning Pinkie a term referencing the smallest finger on the hand. Just like a pinkie promise, the land does also appear to take the form of a Kelingking or pinkie finger.
The Instagram famous coastal cliffscape, which truly does look like a T-rex didn’t disappoint. I still remember the moment I laid eyes on the beach below. It felt like I was a human drone. I watched the crystal clear water slowly form into a wave before crashing below us, in what seemed like slow motion.
Just a couple minutes walk from Angel’s Billabong, you will find the remains of what once was a massive cave. This place is now called the Broken Beach. Long time ago the roof collapsed and now this walled bay can only be accessed through a hole in the rock formation. This spectacular place is definitely one of the best places to see in Nusa Penida. If you have time continue your hike along the rough coastline with its massive cliffs.
By now, we were all so tired from the non-stop island hopping all morning that when we arrived at Crystal Bay, we slumped on the sand and began an hour of recovery! It’s a picture perfect white sand beach, with tall palm trees, hammocks, and fresh coconuts. We had fries with sambal sauce, and Bintang bottles for all of us. It was the most draining (partly because the weather was not really good) and it is the most expensive part of our Bali trip, but I wouldn’t miss this for anything.
