During the pre production stage of recording Danton and I were running through the songs I had written for the album. I thought I had played them all when I remembered Canary. We were just about to end for the day when I said ‘well there is this one, not sure if you will like it’. And boom – Danton totally loved it and as soon as we had developed the drum part with the fantastic John Blease it all came together to become our favourite song on the record. I love the combination of fragile almost operatic vocals combined with this industrial sounding drum kit. It reminded me of my days of discovering Nine Inch Nails. But the space. I love the space. When you take out guitars and strings and just have bass, drums vocals and a little piano wow such a dynamic can be achieved and there is so much room to move vocally. The production is all I could have hoped for and Pete Maher has done a brilliant mastering job. I had written Canary in Berlin last year in response to a dear friend of mine, Jim Kroft’s track Canary In The Coalmine. The image of a solitary bright light, struggling in the darkness really stayed in my mind and became a metaphor for the struggle to believe in oneself and the battle to defy the fears that we hold onto so tightly. Visually the story I wanted to tell was very simply one of transition, from dark to light, a tale of metamorphosis, a shedding of past layers and of defeating the fears and paranoia’s that prevent us from fulfilling our true potential. I wanted to play with light and shadows and to use movement and dance to depict the character’s struggle to break free of her own restraints. So when it came to deciding which track I wanted to release and make a video for first there was no doubt in my mind it had to be Canary. But once again there was no money in the pot to make it happen. In stepped Broken Blonde. I received a phone call from a very lovely man called Dean who totally showered me with praise, rejoicing over my music and asking to meet in order to discuss the possibility of Broken Blonde sponsoring the making of a music video. My jaw dropped! The Universe once more had heard. And so to London I went to meet Dean and Troy, two lovely and enthusiastic fellas. I am not sure then they fully knew what they where letting themselves in for but my god they took on the challenge with full force. Gathering a crew of 25, something like 11 locations, 6 dancers, make up artists, hairstylists... It was unbelievable. And all because they believed in the song and me. Truly incredible. I still can’t believe it. I hope you enjoy what we created and a massive thank you to everyone involved I think we have made something wonderful we can be very proud of.
