Questions often arise around networks in case of a health emergency. In such a case, a sick or injured person will be admitted to the closest hospital’s emergency room (whether state or private) for stabilisation. If private, and the hospital is not in the scheme’s network, then the patient will be stabilised and if necessary, transferred to a hospital on his or her network.
If the emergency is life-threatening, the hospital costs will be covered. However, should his condition require urgent intervention by a specialist, it may be that the first available specialist is not on the scheme’s network. In this event, the scheme will pay the specialist whatever scheme rate is applicable to the patient’s policy, and the patient will be required to pay any shortfall.
