The wild pineapple or piro en espanol is not native to panama but has been naturalized over the years growing in forests, along fences for protection and here on the beach.  The sharp spines make it an excellent addition to a live fence but do not let that deter you from these sweet and sour little fruits.  These fiberous morsels are delicious after ripening.
