I ventured off to Brooklyn Bowl on Saturday night for the first time. My expectations were not overwhelmingly high, primarily because I had heard so many good things about it, I naturally felt it was overhyped.
I was proven decisively wrong. They served only two brewery's beers on tap: Brooklyn (the brewery is located around the corner, literally) and Kelso. I'm a moderate fan of both, so I went about sampling some Brooklyn beers I hadn't had before. I started off with the Brooklyn Bowl Pale Ale, brewed by Kelso. As you can see from the photo below, credit goes to them for the fitting tap handle. The beer itself was fairly middle of the road in that it was a standard pale ale, with no hops to speak of, but satisfying to start the night off. Moving on, I sampled Brooklyn's Pinspotter Ale next, and felt this wasn't as good as the Brooklyn Bowl Pale Ale. It wasn't a bad beer, but as you'll note as my posts increase, I'm very blunt about how I feel about beers, and this one didn't evoke any motivation for me to grab another.
Luckily, after striking up a conversation with a bartender, I discovered a great IPA: Brooklyn Blast. The handle was a unique red (as seen in a photo below) in comparison to other Brooklyn Brewery beers, and the beer was very hoppy, but not overpowering. I'm not sure why I haven't seen this in bottles anywhere, since it's much tastier than Brooklyn's regular IPA and very refreshing.
In all, a great night of brews, and the bowling was real solid as well. It was a bit of a wait to bowl, but with at least eight beers on tap and live music, all worth it.
