Lets face it. We have all gone on our slumps or taken mini vacations from working out. During said slumps, usually with ice cream in hand (if your exercise routine goes in the dumps usually your nutrition follows), we have all looked over to our friend and said "Blehhh I feel awful". That sluggish, unhappy, down and out feeling can be directly related back to lack of exercise.
Numerous studies have shown the physiological benefits of exercising. Often when people are on a steady exercise routine they talk about how they have more confidence, are less stressed, and generally happier. While much of this is related to our body becoming more physically fit, it is also due to the hormones and chemicals released from exercise.
So how and why does this happen? The certain chemicals in our body which produce this feeling are called endorphins. They have been shown to activate the same brain receptors that cause the high in recreational drugs, so (in a much healthier way!) people can become addicted to working out. Prolonged forms of exercise such as circuit training or cardiovascular interval training are best known to release endorphins and create this happy and healthy feeling.
An example could be after a solid work out, you're getting ready for a night out with your friends and you notice a shirt that you wear often is fitting exceptionally well that night. Your body more than likely hasn't changed much in a week but due to the "natural high" you receive from working out, it feels that way. As we all know, if you feel happy and comfortable with yourself, it will be projected to those around you. Regardless of your current fitness state, our main goal as trainers is to increase your overall health and wellness. This includes the psychological aspects of happiness, confidence, self-image, as well as the plethora of physiological improvements we hope to make.
This is one of the many examples of how exercise can benefit you. It is not rocket science…exercise, eat healthy, feel great. What are you waiting for?
