I've just seen the crappiest take on Bucky Barnes in a good long while. I considered linking the article that sparked this, but even the title is a spoiler for Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #5 - and I don't particularly want to give the article any more views anyway.
Basically, the article was talking about how, if Bucky is "just" a friend to Steve Rogers, rather than being in constant torment from his past, in danger of his Winter Soldier brainwashing taking over, and/or acting as an actual enemy to Steve, his character is boring.
To be clear, I haven't read any of the comics and don't really plan to, so I don't know the details of this particular storyline. Maybe they're right, and Bucky has been mishandled to the point that he barely serves any plot significance and doesn't show up much. But I don't think I really need any context to be able to tell that I hate this reaction to his character - or any character, honestly.
Since when is friendship "boring"? Since when is it better for the main character's best friend to constantly be betraying him, or used against him, rather than fighting alongside him for the same goals?
If Bucky is boring in his current iteration, it's not because he's "just" a friend. You can absolutely 100% tell an interesting story about two best friends who never betray each other, never lie to each other, never get in a fight, always have each other's backs.... That's not inherently boring. The world needs more wholesome, supportive, loyal friendships like that.
Give me an unproblematic, supportive relationship full of hugs and smiles over the twistiest plot twist any day.
